Proposed Budget Cuts to LGBTQ+ Youth Crisis Helpline Raise Alarms

Proposed budget cuts threaten vital LGBTQ+ youth support services

There's growing concern about recent government budget proposals that could slash funding critical support services aimed at LGBTQ+ youth. The proposal suggests pulling financial support from LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services, which forms a key part in 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, by this October. This service, managed by Health and Human Services, provides indispensable help in crises, especially when LGBTQ+ young people are at risk.

Since its launch in July 2022, this federal initiative has been a lifeline—making a difference in over 1.2 million young lives. With more than 14.5 million contacts, including 9.8 million calls and 2.57 million texts directed towards suicide-prevention organizations, its impact has been monumental. Calls have surged, from 1,752 in September 2022, soaring up 58,924 by February 2025. Yet, as significant as these numbers are, this service's future hangs in balance.

Concerns from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups

Jaymes Black, CEO at The Trevor Project, a leading advocate in LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention, has expressed grave concerns about these proposed cuts. Black fears that withdrawing financial support "puts lives at risk," emphasizing how these services always enjoyed bipartisan Congressional support. "Suicide prevention isn't about identity, it comes down right down risk," Black noted, pointing out how this mental health crisis continues gripping young lives nationwide.

The Trevor Project estimates that over 1.8 million LGBTQ+ young people in America contemplate suicide each year. It's alarming that suicide ranks as second-leading cause death children ages 10 14, with attempted suicides happening every 45 seconds. Despite looming threat budget cuts, Black assures The Trevor Project and similar organizations will keep providing 24/7 support.

Black calls upon current administration maintain its commitment preventing suicides, particularly within vulnerable groups like LGBTQ+ youth. "We urge Congress defend this data-driven, bipartisan program and ensure it saves lives generations," Black continued, advocating unified effort that rises political lines, focusing safeguarding young lives.

Patterns show administration's reduced funding LGBTQ+ protective initiatives. For example, cuts in Department Health raise concerns about undoing progress combating HIV other STIs, both domestically and globally. The Human Rights Campaign urges reconsidering these decisions avoid "devastating consequences."
