The Australian Open, one of the most prestigious events in the tennis calendar, is about to commence, and this year it features five openly gay players, all competing in the women's categories. Among them, three are participating in singles matches, while two are taking part in doubles.
In women's singles, the standout player is undoubtedly Daria Kasatkina from Russia. Kasatkina, who has impressively climbed the rankings to become the world's No. 9 player, is celebrated not only for her tennis prowess but also for her courage in coming out publicly in 2022. Her contributions to the sport and her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights led to her being recognized as the "Female Hero of the Year" in 2023.
Kasatkina has been vocal about issues beyond the tennis court. She has openly criticized the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for hosting events in Saudi Arabia, a nation known for its anti-LGBTQ laws. In a statement, she emphasized, “Money talks in our world right now. For me, I don’t think that everything is about the money.” Currently, she is in a relationship with figure skater Natalia Zabiiako, and the couple often share glimpses of their life together on social media.
Greet Minnen, a Belgian player ranked 94th, is another inspiring figure in women’s singles. Minnen came out in 2018, revealing her relationship with fellow Belgian tennis player Alison Van Uytvanck. Though their engagement ended in 2021, Minnen continues to make her mark on the tennis world. She achieved her first top 10 victory in 2022, defeating former world No. 1 Garbiñe Muguruza with a decisive 6–4, 6–0 win.
Nadia Podoroska, who ranks just behind Minnen at 95th, is another openly gay player participating in the tournament. The Argentine player disclosed in 2022 that she was in a relationship with fellow Argentine player Guillermina Naya. Naya has reached a career-high ranking of 340th in women’s doubles, and the couple has teamed up for doubles competitions in the past.
Despite her efforts in qualifiers, American player Emina Bektas was unable to secure a spot in the Australian Open after a close match against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, ending with a score of 6-2, 7-5. Bektas, who was previously married to British tennis player Tara Moore, remains a prominent figure in the tennis community.
In the doubles category, Dutch player Demi Schuurs stands out as the highest-ranked openly gay player. Schuurs, currently ranked world No. 24 in doubles, once reached a peak ranking of No. 7. Her consistent performance and openness about her sexuality make her a role model for aspiring LGBTQ+ athletes.
Notably, the 2025 Australian Open does not feature any openly gay male players. Although there is significant support from top ATP players, the absence of openly gay men in the draw highlights the ongoing challenges within the sport. Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, who made headlines when he came out as gay in 2024, is unfortunately ranked 400th, placing him outside the qualification for direct entry to the tournament. Nonetheless, his recognition as the "Male Hero of the Year" showcases his inspiring journey and contribution to LGBTQ+ visibility in sports.
The stories of these athletes are not just about their achievements on the court but also their courage to live authentically. As the Australian Open gets underway, these players continue to inspire fans around the world, demonstrating the power of inclusivity and acceptance in sports.
