Rutger published: Pro Hockey Player Shares Mixed Feelings About "Heated Rivalry" TV Show

Zach Sullivan, who plays professional hockey and proudly identifies as part LGBTQ+ community, recently opened up about his mixed feelings toward a popular TV series called "Heated Rivalry."

Sullivan, a defenseman with Manchester Storm in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), stands out as one few male hockey players publicly acknowledged being bisexual. In a heartfelt essay on social media, he didn't shy away from expressing both admiration and discomfort regarding this show.

Based on Rachel Reid's novels, "Heated Rivalry" has been praised worldwide its portrayal gay romance within competitive hockey. Although many people love this series challenging traditional sports narratives, Sullivan confesses it stirs up mixed emotions in him.

"It's a deeply conflicted experience," he says. "While show does a lot good LGBTQ community, it also forces confront my own personal traumas."

At 31, Sullivan commends series tackling LGBTQ relationships men's sports, providing hope those who felt unseen growing up. Yet, he points out that it can paint somewhat misleading picture, glossing over intense psychological struggles closeted athletes face.

"Sometimes feels like parts my life are playing out right front me," he shares. "I truly appreciate what show offers LGBTQ community and how challenges ice hockey evolve. But I also hate it because makes relive personal trauma."

Since deciding come out 2020, Sullivan has had deal pressure "act tough" while handling psychological burden being both professional athlete and openly bisexual.

"I think this series will end being net positive LGBTQ+ community," he concludes, "but I'm also concerned about extra pressure might put professional players already struggling with their sexuality."

Sullivan highlights scene "Heated Rivalry" where main character, Shane Hollander, calmly handles his sexuality being brought up during dinner. "That kind situation feels like a living nightmare," he says. "In reality, fear being outed usually outweighs courage face situation head-on."

Despite these hurdles, Sullivan remains committed championing better representation and understanding sports. His involvement projects like Will Shepherd's short film "Pride. On Ice?" underscores dedication advocating LGBTQ inclusion hockey.
