Rutger published: Pride Pioneers: Two Gay Swimmers Share Their Inspiring Friendship Journey

This story was originally published back in 2017, and we’re excited to share it again as part of our ongoing Pride Pioneer series celebrating stories of courage and friendship.

Meet Axel and Josh: two college swimmers who became each other's support system as they navigated their journeys of self-discovery and coming out. This is their story.

Meet Axel Reed

Axel grew up in Trabuco Canyon, California, in an environment where traditional values were emphasized. From a young age, he sensed he was different, though he couldn't quite articulate how. Throughout his school years, Axel adeptly concealed his true self, suppressing emotions and adhering to societal expectations of masculinity. Competitive swimming provided an escape, a place where he could channel his energy and find some solace.

As he transitioned to Villanova University, Axel faced new challenges and pressures. Despite his attempts to keep his sexuality private, the inevitability of truth unfolded as he began to trust his swim teammates with his secret. To Axel's relief, their response was overwhelmingly supportive. By the time he transferred to Chapman University, Axel had gained the courage to be upfront with his new team, who welcomed him with open arms.

Acceptance from teammates was invaluable, but Axel realized the true battle was internal. He had to confront his own fears and insecurities, moving past the loneliness he had imposed on himself. In overcoming this, Axel was determined to be a source of support for his friend Josh.

Meet Josh Velasquez

Josh’s upbringing in Corona, California, was marked by a close-knit family and a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for him. Despite the love surrounding him, Josh felt isolated due to his hidden identity. The expectations of heteronormativity within his family, coupled with past trauma, compounded his internal struggle.

The fear of rejection loomed large as Josh grappled with his identity. His experiences in swimming, often labeled a "gay sport," forced him to construct a facade of heterosexuality. Yet, deep down, he yearned for acceptance and the ability to live authentically.

Josh’s pivotal moment came during his sophomore year at the University of Arizona, when he bravely disclosed his sexuality to his immediate family. To his surprise, he was met with love, understanding, and a renewed sense of belonging. This acceptance was a transformative experience that allowed Josh to gradually embrace his true self.

The Bond of Friendship

Axel and Josh’s friendship blossomed over shared experiences in competitive swimming. They connected initially via social media, eventually becoming confidants who supported each other through life’s challenges. The crucial turning point came when Axel reached out to Josh with a simple yet profound query, leading to mutual revelations that deepened their bond.

While Axel’s earlier experiences allowed him to guide Josh through the coming out process, Josh in turn inspired Axel with his confidence and authenticity. Their friendship was a lifeline, providing an anchor and a source of strength during moments of doubt and fear.

Even as they faced personal struggles, their friendship remained steadfast. Axel was there for Josh during his darkest times, ensuring that he never felt alone. Similarly, Josh’s unwavering confidence encouraged Axel to embrace his own identity more fully.

Moving Forward

Today, Axel and Josh have grown into their authentic selves, celebrating their identities with pride. They’ve shared their journey not only to inspire other LGBTQ+ individuals but also to remind everyone of the importance of supportive friendships.

Axel graduated from Chapman University with a focus in real estate, while Josh pursued a career in neuroscience. As they continue to achieve their personal and professional dreams, their friendship remains a testament to the power of support, love, and acceptance.

Axel and Josh’s story is a beacon of hope, illustrating that with the right support, anyone can overcome adversity and embrace who they truly are.

Remember, you are never alone. Share your story, embrace your truth, and surround yourself with those who celebrate your unique journey. Together, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate world.

We hope this narrative encourages others to find confidence and solace in their own paths, knowing that they are not alone. Axel and Josh’s friendship is a powerful reminder of the impact that meaningful connections can have on our lives.
