Pride Pioneer: A Rowing Coach's Inspiring Journey Against Homophobia

This inspiring story originally emerged a few years ago, but it's worth revisiting as part of our Pride Pioneer series. It tells the tale of Simon Haerinck, a rower and coach from Belgium, whose dedication to inclusivity in sports has sparked a national conversation.

Simon wasn't always a rower. Growing up, he found joy in basketball and tennis, but eventually paused these sports to focus on his college education. It wasn't until he was 28 that Simon discovered rowing, starting relatively late compared to most athletes in the field. Despite the late start, Simon quickly found himself enthralled by the sport.

"Rowing became an addiction," Simon recalls. "Training five times a week, my fellow rowers soon became like a second family. The intensity of training creates a unique bond."

In addition to being a dedicated athlete, Simon also coaches young rowers, emphasizing not only the technical skills of rowing but also the importance of creating a welcoming environment. "It's crucial to me that everyone feels comfortable and free to be their true selves," he asserts.

Creating a Safe Space in Sports

Understanding the significance of acceptance, Simon was inspired to take action against homophobia in sports. He launched a social media campaign titled #samesportdifferentsexuality. The campaign's goal was to highlight and combat homophobia, encouraging both tolerance and acceptance in sports communities.

"I came out when I was 23, after five years of concealing my sexuality," Simon shares. "I wished I hadn't waited so long, and I don't want anyone else to endure that stress. With #samesportdifferentsexuality, I hope to provide support and encouragement to those still hiding."

Simon emphasizes the importance of collaboration between straight and queer athletes. "For true acceptance in sports, both groups must work together," he insists. By involving athletes from various backgrounds, Simon believes the campaign can have a profound impact, especially on those who feel isolated or afraid to come out.

The Viral Impact

Before launching the campaign, Simon was apprehensive about its reach. "I told a friend I hoped to impact a few hundred people," he remembers. However, the response exceeded all expectations. The campaign rapidly gained traction, becoming national news across Belgium and capturing the attention of major newspapers and radio stations.

"We were even invited to appear on a TV talk show," Simon recounts with astonishment. Within days, the campaign reached over 200,000 people. "I can't express how grateful I am for the overwhelming support and to everyone who helped spread our message."

The campaign also caught the attention of individuals worldwide, receiving hundreds of messages from supporters and those who found courage in Simon's story. One message, in particular, stood out to Simon. Eduard, a 21-year-old closeted volleyball player from Belgium, shared his fears of coming out to his allegedly homophobic coach.

After reaching out, Simon encouraged Eduard to confront his fears. Inspired by Simon's campaign, Eduard bravely came out to his coach, who was surprisingly supportive, treating Eduard no differently than before.

"Eduard texted me the next day, relieved," Simon recalls. "Just knowing the campaign helped someone is incredibly fulfilling, and I hope it inspires more people to be themselves without fear."

A Continuing Mission

The campaign's success reaffirmed the persistent issue of homophobia in sports, but it also signaled positive change. Simon received countless messages of support from straight individuals, underscoring a growing understanding and acceptance.

Simon, now 34, continues to dedicate himself to the cause. As a coach for young rowers at the Royal Rowing Club in Ghent, Belgium, and manager of a sports hotel, he integrates these values in every aspect of his work.

"I have more plans for the campaign," Simon hints. "The journey doesn't end here. Let's keep pushing for change."
