In a recent heartfelt revelation, David Coote, a former top-level referee in English football, openly shared his journey of coming out as gay. This disclosure came after a tumultuous period in Coote's life, marked by personal struggles and professional setbacks.
Coote had been a prominent figure in the Premier League, officiating matches for more than six years. His career, however, took a significant turn when he was dismissed by PGMOL, the body responsible for managing elite referees in England, following an investigation into his behavior.
The 42-year-old referee from Nottingham had built an impressive career. He was included on FIFA's international list of referees from 2020 to 2022 and played a critical role as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany. Despite these achievements, Coote's career was not without controversy.
In November, a video surfaced online featuring Coote allegedly making derogatory remarks about then Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. This incident, reportedly filmed during the 2020/21 season, resulted in Coote's suspension as PGMOL conducted an investigation.
Only days later, another video emerged, purportedly showing Coote using a white powder while working at the Euro 2024 tournament. Additional allegations included claims of unsanctioned conduct during a 2019 match, although Coote denies these accusations.
Despite these challenges, Coote decided to speak openly about his sexuality, a decision driven by a desire to live authentically. In a candid interview, he expressed feeling "a deep sense of shame" about his sexuality during his teenage years. Coote revealed he came out to his parents at 21 and to his friends four years later.
Reflecting on his career, Coote officiated in the English Football League before his promotion to the Premier League in 2018, where he managed 112 games, including the 2023 Carabao Cup final. However, the demands and scrutiny of being a high-profile referee led him to conceal his sexuality, impacting his mental health significantly.
Coote acknowledged the pressures he faced, stating, "I had received deeply unpleasant messages during my career as a referee, and to add my sexuality to that would have been really difficult." He highlighted the need for progress in addressing discrimination in football and society.
In a statement to Sky Sports, Coote took responsibility for his actions, expressing remorse for any offense caused and the negative attention it brought to the sport. "This has been one of the most difficult periods of my life," he admitted. "I am truly sorry for any offense caused by my actions and for the negative spotlight it put on the game that I love."
Coote emphasized his commitment to prioritizing his mental health and hoped that sharing his experiences could contribute positively to football in the future. He expressed gratitude for the support received from family, friends, and colleagues, including PGMOL and its technical director Howard Webb, as well as countless strangers who reached out with encouragement.
By sharing his story, Coote hopes to inspire others facing similar struggles and to foster a more inclusive environment within the sport. His journey underscores the complexities of balancing personal authenticity with professional responsibilities in a challenging public arena.
