Rutger published: Potential Consequences of a Ban on Private Hormones for Trans Youth

Recent discussions within the government to extend the ban on puberty blockers to include private hormone prescriptions for those under 18 have raised serious concerns among experts. Clinical psychologist Dr. Aidan Kelly, director of Gender Plus, has expressed fears that such a policy could lead to a "lost generation" of transgender youth.

The current prohibition on puberty blockers, substances deemed "life-saving" by various medical bodies, has already restricted access to these treatments in the UK, allowing them only within NHS-commissioned clinical trials. Now, there are reports that the government might further restrict access by banning private prescriptions for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for trans youth.

Concerns Over Lack of Transparency

Dr. Kelly voiced concerns about the transparency of the decision-making process. According to him, an expert panel is supposedly being formed to evaluate HRT usage and its effects on transgender people, but details about this panel remain unclear. "The lack of transparency is troubling," Dr. Kelly told us. "We were not informed about the panel's formation and are unsure who its members are and what expertise they have regarding trans healthcare."

Gender Plus, along with other private trans healthcare providers, was not consulted in the creation of this panel, despite being directly impacted by its potential findings. This lack of consultation has created anxiety and mistrust among those in the trans community who rely on private services for essential healthcare.

Impact on Trans Youth

Gender Plus, which frequently assists 16 and 17-year-olds seeking healthcare, has already noticed increased distress among its patients due to the uncertainty surrounding potential policy changes. Dr. Kelly reported a surge in inquiries from concerned families and young people worried about losing access to necessary treatments.

"If private prescriptions for HRT are banned for under-18s," Dr. Kelly explained, "we could see a rise in young people turning to DIY methods to obtain hormones. This is not only risky but highlights a severe gap in providing adequate care for trans youth."

Risks of DIY Hormone Therapy

DIY hormone therapy involves purchasing hormones online without medical supervision, increasing the risk of health complications. Dr. Kelly emphasized that the potential ban might unintentionally push vulnerable youth toward unsafe alternatives. "We've started to see more young people turning to these methods in desperation, which is deeply concerning," he added.

Despite the risks associated with DIY hormone therapy, Dr. Kelly believes that the government is not prioritizing the well-being of trans youth. He suggested that officials seem to think that inaction is a neutral stance, which he strongly refutes. "The ripple effects of such policies can have profound, long-lasting impacts," he said.

Call for Engagement with Experts

Dr. Kelly urges the government to engage directly with private healthcare providers, like Gender Plus, to understand the significant positive impact hormone treatments can have. "We have the data and the experience to show how transformative these treatments can be," he stated. "For most young people, access to hormone therapy is life-altering and allows them to live fulfilling, normal lives."

Gender Plus has seen hundreds of referrals each year from trans youth seeking care. Dr. Kelly highlights that while hormone therapy may not be right for everyone, for those it does help, the improvements in mental health and quality of life are undeniable.

He concluded with a plea for the government to reconsider its stance on private hormone prescriptions, warning that failing to do so could lead to unnecessary harm and hardship for trans youth across the country. The voices of those affected and the experts who support them must be heard to ensure policies are informed by real-world experiences and evidence.

As discussions continue, it is crucial that the well-being of trans youth remains at the forefront, ensuring they have access to the care they need to thrive.
