Rutger published: Polish Ski Jumper Andrzej Stekala Comes Out as Gay, Honors Late Partner in Heartfelt New Year’s Message

Andrzej Stekala Shares His Truth on New Year’s Day

On New Year’s Day, Polish ski jumper Andrzej Stekala made a deeply personal revelation to his fans and followers. The athlete, who is known for his impressive achievements in the world of ski jumping, publicly came out as gay through an emotional Instagram post. The announcement marks a significant moment in Stekala’s life as he opens up about his identity and pays tribute to his late partner, Damian.

A Journey of Love and Loss

Stekala, a bronze medalist at the 2021 World Ski Championships, shared that he has kept his sexuality a secret for many years. He wrote, “I want you to meet my true self. I am gay. I have kept this fact a secret for years—from you, from the media, and sometimes even from myself.”

The athlete recounted his loving relationship with Damian, describing him as “the person who changed my life—he was my pillar, my support, and my biggest fan.” Tragically, Damian passed away in November, leaving Stekala to navigate the world without his beloved partner.

The Instagram post was accompanied by a moving video reel, celebrating the couple’s time together. It featured photos from their holidays and tender moments, all set to the song "Good News" by Shaboozey. This heartfelt tribute serves as a reminder of the deep bond they shared and the love that will continue to endure.

Overcoming Heartbreak and Embracing Identity

In his message, Stekala expressed the profound grief he has been experiencing since Damian's passing. “I cannot find the words to describe the pain I have been feeling ever since that fatal day,” he wrote. “The world we had been building together fell to pieces. Every day without him is a fight, but also a reminder of how unconditionally I loved and was loved.”

Despite the heartbreak, Stekala is determined to move forward, honoring Damian’s memory by living authentically. “Today, on the 1st of January, I am starting a new chapter,” he declared. “I do not want to hide who I am anymore. I am myself—a human being who loved and still loves. I know that he [Damian] would want me to go on living at peace with myself.”

The athlete asked for understanding and respect from his followers, emphasizing that his story is one of love and deserves to be shared openly. He thanked his family and friends for their unwavering support, stating, “It is in you where I find my strength to open up.”

A Competitive Spirit and a New Beginning

Andrzej Stekala has a rich history in ski jumping, having competed at the highest levels. In 2016, he was part of the Polish team that secured a bronze medal at the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup in Zakopane. His career highlights also include a third-place finish at the 2020 FIS Ski Flying World Championships and a memorable bronze at the 2021 World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany.

Recently, Stekala has been participating in the FIS Ski Jumping Continental Cup across Europe, with competitions in Norway, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. While currently not part of Poland’s “A team” of ski jumpers, he is optimistic about his future prospects, aiming for success in the coming years.

“I wish you all love and courage in the coming year,” Stekala concluded in his post, extending a message of hope and resilience to his audience.

Support and Solidarity from the Community

Stekala’s courageous announcement has resonated deeply within the sports community and beyond. His post has garnered hundreds of supportive comments from fans, fellow athletes, and public figures alike. Among the well-wishers is Norway’s three-time World Championships silver medalist, Halvor Egner Granerud, who wrote, “Stay strong Andrzej… heartbreaking to read about your loss. Hope your brave 2025 will be a good year for you, filled with the freedom of not hiding who you are. All the best wishes.”

Stekala’s coming out contributes to a broader movement of LGBTQ+ representation in sports. He joins the ranks of athletes such as Austrian ski jumper Daniela Iraschko-Stolz, Canadian ski jumper Eric Mitchell, and American freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, who have also shared their authentic selves with the world.

As Stekala prepares to return to competitive action with the Continental Cup resuming in Klingenthal, Germany, he embarks on this new chapter with the love and support of his community behind him.
