In Kannapolis, North Carolina, police officers have fatally shot Edgar Maddison Welch, a 36-year-old man widely known for his involvement in a dangerous incident at a Washington, D.C. pizzeria. Welch, who had become infamous due to the "Pizzagate" conspiracy theory, was killed during a traffic stop on January 4.
The encounter occurred when officers attempted to arrest Welch for an outstanding probation violation warrant. During the stop, Welch reportedly pulled a handgun on the officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Welch succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Two officers involved in the shooting, Brooks Jones and Caleb Tate, are currently on administrative leave as the state's bureau of investigation reviews the circumstances of the incident.
Welch first gained notoriety in December 2016 when he entered Comet Ping Pong, a pizzeria owned by James Alefantis, a gay entrepreneur, believing in a bizarre and unfounded conspiracy. The theory alleged that the restaurant was part of a widespread child trafficking ring involving high-profile politicians.
Armed with an assault rifle, Welch stormed into the pizzeria, causing patrons to flee in terror. He discharged his weapon in the restaurant, attempting to access a nonexistent basement where he believed illicit activities were taking place. Finding no evidence to support the conspiracy, Welch surrendered to authorities and was later sentenced to four years in prison for transporting firearms across state lines, along with a substantial fine for the damages caused.
The Pizzagate conspiracy, which falsely linked LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to horrific crimes, has roots in misinformation spread across social media and right-wing platforms. It is a precursor to the QAnon conspiracy, which similarly targets LGBTQ+ communities with slanderous accusations.
In 2016, the conspiracy theory gained traction through dubious claims about coded emails involving high-ranking Democrats. Right-wing websites and personalities, including Alex Jones and others, promoted these baseless allegations, exacerbating threats and harassment toward Alefantis, his business, and those associated with it.
Threats extended beyond Comet Ping Pong, affecting other businesses and individuals in the area. Even children photographed at the pizzeria became targets as conspiracy theorists claimed they were victims of trafficking.
Despite numerous debunkings by reputable news and fact-checking organizations, the Pizzagate conspiracy continued to incite violence and fear. In 2019, Comet Ping Pong faced another attack when an arsonist set fire to a section of the restaurant, though no injuries were reported thanks to the quick actions of the staff.
The business owner, Alefantis, has consistently spoken out against the falsehoods, describing Pizzagate as a "fictional lie-based story" and a "coordinated political attack." The broader LGBTQ+ community also recognizes the damage such conspiracy theories inflict, as they fuel prejudice and endanger lives.
The tragic outcome of Welch’s confrontation with police underscores the potential for conspiracy theories to lead individuals down dangerous paths, resulting in real harm. It also highlights the need for vigilance against the spread of misinformation, which can have dire consequences for targeted communities.
Amidst ongoing threats and challenges, Comet Ping Pong and its community continue to stand resilient, advocating for truth and safety against baseless attacks that seek to divide and harm.
