Chris Bush talks trans visibility and her latest play, "Otherland"

In a candid chat, renowned playwright and director Chris Bush opened up about what it means being a trans person in today's spotlight. At 38, she's already a seasoned pro in theatre but admits that stepping out as a visible trans person brings its own setof fears and anxieties—especially now with all eyes on you.

The story behind "Otherland"

Sitting down with The Observer, Bush delved deep intothe heart and soul behind her latest play, "Otherland." It tells a couple's heartfelt tale as Harry comes out as a trans woman. Although Bush came out at 30, she initially felt some jitters about weaving trans stories intothe fabricof her work.

"I didn't wantto be boxedinto just writing trans stories,” Bush confessed, wrestling withthe daunting taskof bringing her identitytothe stage andthe public. "It can be nerve-wracking," she admitted.

The challengeof being in The Public Eye

Even among London's creative circles, Bush highlightedthe pressures trans individuals face every day. She pondered, "Why would anyone willingly open themselves uptothis kindof public scrutiny?"

While playwrights might not typically befront-and-center inthe media, any trans person who stepsintoThe Spotlight risks backlash—evenforThe most innocuous remarks. "Why put yourself through that?" she mused.

A transformative hope

With "Otherland," Bush hopesThe play resonates as something truly transformative. While not plucked straight from her life, Bush admits there are echoesof herself in Harry.”

"This isn't my life story," she stressed, sharingthat she's been through a breakup similar tothe play. "Harry has bits and piecesof me. But Jo? Not my ex at all,” she said with a nod.

Blending reality and fiction

Bush reflected onthe tricky balanceof infusing personal experiences intothestory while keeping things fresh. "Sure, I'll write about my life and struggles," she said. "But someone else'strials? That doesn't interest me one bit." Her words ring with a promiseof authenticity.

Bush envisions her play having a real impact, especially with so few stories by trans women on big stages. "Who knows when we'll seethe Next play by a trans woman at a place like Almeida?" she remarked. "Even if you didn't ask forthis role, you end up being a voicefor something bigger."
