**Exploring a new wave in surfing: LGBTQ+ inclusivity and empowerment** Ever been asked, “Is that your girlfriend?” by a surf instructor when you're just trying not fall off your board? It seems harmless, but in places like Sri Lanka, where being open about who you love can have legal repercussions, that question feels like a tidal wave. Instead, I ended up dodged personal questions, concealing my true self instead focusing on catching that perfect wave. How can you even dream about mastering a skill when you're busy pretending? Surfing, like any passion, flourishes when everyone can be themselves, doesn't it? It makes you wonder, how can anyone truly thrive in such an environment without authenticity? ## Challenging stereotypes in surf culture Surf culture has traditionally been a playground ruled by heteronormativity and hyper-masculinity, often overshadowing what surfing truly stands—a free-spirited, inclusive sport. You'll often find surf retreats leaning heavily towards a “bro” vibe or some superficial wellness agenda, leaving little room genuine authenticity has little room. ## Carving out safe havens LGBTQ+ surfers Thankfully, things are shifting. More women and LGBTQ+ surfers are making their mark, although we're far from perfect representation. This need inspired Gay Surf Week—a haven queer adventurers looking ride waves in safe, supportive spaces. Born from years globetrotting and surfing, Gay Surf Week invites queer folks experience thrill riding waves in welcoming atmosphere. Hosted in Costa Rica, Central America first recognize same-sex marriages, Gay Surf Week gathers diverse group—trans surfers, first-timers in their 60s, seasoned pros, those still in closet, even folks seeing ocean first time. In this community, we don't just surf; we celebrate life. We cheer, stay connected long after retreat ends, dance under stars, and create spaces where every person celebrated and welcomed. ## Sapphic Surf Week: Empowering women-loving-women in surfing Building on our success, we created Sapphic Surf Week—an LBT+ centered retreat women-loving-women can truly shine. Held at Surf Synegy in Costa Rica, it offers rejuvenating activities like restorative yoga and delicious home-cooked meals, all in secure, luxurious setting. Both Gay Surf Week and Sapphic Surf Week mix expert coaching with summer camp vibes. From breathwork sessions and ice baths movie nights and pool parties, participants face life challenges while sipping coconuts and enjoying stunning sunsets. Everything covered, from airport pickups sunscreen, so participants can dive deep and explore nearby national parks while riding Costa Rica's famous waves. It week brimming laughter, connection, and authenticity—experience I wish existed when first explored my identity. It more than just vacation; it pride-filled celebration authenticity.
