Jenna Karvunidis Reflects on the Impact of Gender Reveal Parties

Jenna Karvunidis, often acknowledged as the originator of the gender reveal party, has expressed growing concern over the drastic evolution of these celebrations. In an interview, she voiced her discomfort with being linked to the increasingly hazardous and extravagant nature of current gender reveal festivities.

"I'm kind of horrified, going, 'Oh no, please don't associate me with that,'" Karvunidis admitted. She feels a sense of responsibility for the trend, which has spiraled into potentially dangerous territory, overshadowed by the perpetuation of rigid gender norms.

The Dangerous and Problematic Side of Gender Reveals

Initially envisioned as a simple, joyous occasion, gender reveal parties have escalated into events that occasionally end in tragedy. Some have resulted in fatalities and significant environmental damage. "I know that I did not directly cause anything... but in my own way, I felt responsible," she said.

Karvunidis hosted what is widely considered the first gender reveal party in 2008. The event was modest, marked by the cutting of a cake revealing pink icing, indicating the expected sex of her child.

From Innocent Beginnings to Perilous Display

Karvunidis emphasized that her original intent was to foster a sense of community surrounding her child's upcoming birth. "I was really just trying to build a community for my baby," she explained. "I wasn't even trying to focus so much on the gender. I was just kind of using that as a hook to get everybody excited and to have something to reveal."

Despite her simple beginnings, her idea quickly gained traction online, leading to evermore elaborate and dangerous interpretations. These events have led to severe injuries and fatalities, such as a 2019 incident involving a pipe bomb, which tragically killed a grandmother-to-be in Iowa.

More recently, in 2021, two people lost their lives during a gender reveal stunt involving an aircraft, culminating in a devastating crash. That same year, a California couple faced manslaughter charges after a pyrotechnic device at their gender reveal party sparked a wildfire that claimed the life of a firefighter.

A Call for Change

Karvunidis publicly condemned these dangerous interpretations of her idea, urging people to cease hosting such hazardous events. "Stop it," she implored on social media. "Stop having these stupid parties. For the love of God, stop burning things down to tell everyone about your kid's sex. No one cares but you." She also faced backlash and hate messages because of her association with the concept.

Beyond the physical dangers, these events often rely on and reinforce outdated gender stereotypes, which can be harmful to children and dismissive of the broader spectrum of gender identities. The parties typically emphasize traditional gender roles, such as using sports-related symbols for boys and dance-related symbols for girls.

Recognizing the Diversity of Gender Identity

In 2019, Karvunidis shared a personal revelation on social media, highlighting her own child's divergence from traditional gender expectations. "PLOT TWIST, the world's first gender-reveal party baby is a girl who wears suits!" she declared, underscoring that one's potential and talents transcend the gender assigned at birth.

She further reflected, "Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn't live in 2019 and didn't know what we know now—that focusing on gender at birth obscures so much of a child's potential."

The unwelcome attention and cyberbullying following her post added further strain on her family, particularly for her daughter, who found the experience traumatic. "I would love to tell you, 'Oh, it's been a great family story and we just really enjoyed the attention,' but that's not true," Karvunidis confessed.

In hindsight, she expressed regret over having started the trend, saying, "If I could have gone back and never done it I wouldn't, just for the sole reason of not affecting her childhood. I would have never done it."
