Pete Buttigieg Responds to Trump Over DC Plane Crash Blame
In a dramatic turn of events, former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has publicly responded to accusations made by Donald Trump, who attempted to pin responsibility for a tragic plane incident on him. This incident, which marks the end of a 16-year streak without commercial air fatalities in the U.S., involved a collision between a military helicopter and American Eagle Flight 5342 near Reagan National Airport, tragically resulting in the loss of all passengers on board.
Trump, during a press briefing, attributed the crash to Buttigieg's tenure and a supposed overemphasis on diversity hiring practices. Trump claimed, "The FAA, which was overseen by Pete Buttigieg — a real winner, that guy’s a real winner. You know how badly everything’s run since he’s run this Department of Transportation? He’s a disaster." It’s important to note that Buttigieg is no longer the Secretary of Transportation, as Trump had appointed former reality TV star Sean Duffy to the position.
Buttigieg, known for his eloquent and measured responses, took to social media to refute these claims and highlight his track record regarding aviation safety. "Despicable," Buttigieg wrote. "As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying. We put safety first, drove down close calls, grew Air Traffic Control, and had zero commercial airline crash fatalities out of millions of flights on our watch." Buttigieg emphasized that no major commercial airline crashes occurred during his time in office or the subsequent Biden administration, in stark contrast to the recent incident.
Trying to shift the focus back to Trump’s policies, Buttigieg highlighted the decisions made by Trump that could have influenced aviation safety negatively. Trump’s decision to offer severance packages to two million federal workers, potentially including essential air traffic controllers, was part of his strategy to "streamline" the workforce. This, coupled with a hiring freeze, hindered the FAA’s ability to maintain adequate staffing levels.
Further scrutinizing Trump’s actions, Buttigieg pointed out the suspension of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) hiring programs, which Trump mandated the FAA to halt. Additionally, Trump ally Elon Musk forced the resignation of Michael Whitaker, the former head of the FAA, following proposed fines against SpaceX for safety issues, raising questions about the intersection of politics and safety regulations.
The abrupt firing of the TSA head and the dismissal of the Aviation Security Advisory Committee (ASAC) members last week by Trump has also raised eyebrows. The ASAC, a body formed in response to the PanAm Flight 103 tragedy, plays a critical role in advising on aviation security measures. Such dismissals could be seen as undermining the established security infrastructure.
Buttigieg’s rebuttal serves as a call for accountability and leadership. As he stated, "President Trump now oversees the military and the FAA. One of his first acts was to fire and suspend some of the key personnel who helped keep our skies safe. Time for the President to show actual leadership and explain what he will do to prevent this from happening again."
As the LGBTQ+ community and allies watch this political drama unfold, the underlying issues of diversity, leadership, and safety in public infrastructure remain pertinent. Buttigieg's remarks not only defend his legacy but also challenge current and future leaders to prioritize safety and inclusivity in aviation and beyond.
