As Pete Buttigieg prepares to step down from his role as the Secretary of Transportation, he shares his reflections on his tenure and what lies ahead. Having made history as the first openly gay cabinet member to serve a full presidential term, Buttigieg leaves behind a legacy of progress and innovation.
During an exit interview, Buttigieg highlighted his pride in the accomplishments achieved under his leadership. He noted the significant strides made in improving America’s transportation infrastructure, driven by President Joe Biden's $1.2 trillion infrastructure law. This ambitious plan saw over 72,000 projects initiated, with 22,000 already completed, marking a substantial enhancement in the nation's transportation framework.
Buttigieg expressed confidence in his successor, Sean Duffy, whom he believes will continue the important work. He emphasized the role of local, state, and tribal authorities in executing the projects funded by the infrastructure law, underscoring the non-partisan nature of these efforts.
The outgoing Secretary acknowledged that while progress has been significant, much work remains. Some of the most critical projects, like the tunnels connecting New York and New Jersey, won't reach completion for another several presidential terms, reflecting the long-term nature of infrastructure development.
Drawing parallels to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Buttigieg discussed how transformative policies often take time to be fully realized and appreciated. He noted the ACA's journey from contentious beginnings to becoming a central Democratic success story, illustrating how infrastructure improvements might similarly evolve in public perception over time.
Buttigieg pointed out the challenges in garnering attention for unambiguously positive outcomes, given the contemporary media landscape's focus on more sensational stories. This has often overshadowed the department’s achievements, despite significant reductions in roadway deaths by over 5.6% since 2021.
Looking ahead, Buttigieg has several personal aspirations. He expressed interest in pursuing a pilot’s license through a program at Northwestern Michigan College. Additionally, he mentioned a desire to engage more with educational initiatives, aiming to connect with students and explore new ideas.
On a personal note, Buttigieg is eager to spend more quality time with his family, acknowledging the sacrifices they made during his political tenure. “I got what I asked for for Christmas, which is a splitting maul and a new axe. So I’ll be chopping a lot of wood and being outside a little more,” he shared, highlighting a desire to reconnect with nature and family life.
Ultimately, Buttigieg hopes to leave a legacy that his children can appreciate. He looks forward to pointing out infrastructure projects that he helped bring to fruition, ensuring that future generations benefit from these developments. “I worked on that, and that’s one of the reasons why I was working so hard back when you were really little and we were getting to know each other,” he envisions telling his children, signifying the long-lasting impact of his work.
As he transitions from public office, Buttigieg remains committed to staying connected with his community and contributing to ongoing dialogues about transportation and infrastructure. His journey serves as a reminder of the importance of long-term vision and dedication to public service.
