Pete Buttigieg Looks Ahead After Leaving Transportation Secretary Post

As the first openly gay cabinet member to complete a full presidential administration, Pete Buttigieg, the outgoing Secretary of Transportation, has been reflecting on his achievements and future plans. With the transition of power underway, Buttigieg spoke candidly about his tenure and what he plans to do next.

In a detailed discussion, Buttigieg shared his pride in the accomplishments made during his time in office. He emphasized the impact of the $1.2 trillion infrastructure law, spearheaded by President Joe Biden, which set 72,000 projects in motion, 22,000 of which are now complete. "I'm convinced that we are leaving America's transportation system in better shape," Buttigieg noted, highlighting the extensive groundwork laid for future developments.

Reflecting on his experiences, Buttigieg acknowledged the complexities of his role. "The effectiveness of the position often depended on local authorities," he explained, referring to the state, local, tribal, and regional officials managing these projects. Despite the political landscape, Buttigieg's focus was on equality and efficiency in handling these responsibilities.

One of the most significant projects under his leadership involved the tunnels connecting New York and New Jersey—an endeavor projected to take up to two decades. "Infrastructure projects often don't align with political cycles," Buttigieg remarked, drawing parallels to the Affordable Care Act's journey from controversy to acceptance.

On a more personal note, Buttigieg expressed his intent to return to academia and community engagement. "I'm considering enrolling in Northwestern Michigan College's flight program to earn my pilot's license," he revealed. Buttigieg also mentioned his excitement about spending more time outdoors and with family, looking forward to "making up for lost time."

Buttigieg's conversation also touched upon the challenges of his role, particularly in battling misinformation on social media. "Good news often doesn't make waves," he observed, lamenting the difficulty of gaining media traction for positive developments.

Despite these hurdles, Buttigieg takes pride in significant achievements, such as reducing roadway deaths by 5.6% since 2021. Looking to the future, he hopes to engage more with students and ideas. "I want to be able to show my children the infrastructure I helped build and say, 'I worked on that,'" he shared, eager to connect his professional legacy with family life.
