Rutger published: Pete Buttigieg Discusses Future Plans and Reflections as He Transitions from Public Office

As he prepares to transition from his role as Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg has shared insights into his future plans and reflections on his tenure in public office. Notably, Buttigieg made history as the first openly gay cabinet member to serve a full term in a presidential administration, and he leaves behind a legacy of significant achievements and challenges.

Looking Back on His Tenure

Buttigieg expressed pride in the progress made under his leadership, specifically highlighting the impact of President Joe Biden's $1.2 trillion infrastructure law. "I’m absolutely convinced that we are leaving America’s transportation system in much better condition than we found it," he stated. Over 72,000 projects have been initiated, with 22,000 already completed, marking a significant stride in infrastructure development.

Despite these accomplishments, Buttigieg acknowledged the complexities of working within federal frameworks, where much of the effectiveness is reliant on collaboration with state, local, and tribal authorities. Many of these projects, he noted, are managed by diverse bodies that ensure equity across political lines.

The Challenges of Public Perception

Reflecting on the challenges faced during his term, Buttigieg pointed to the difficulties in garnering public attention for positive news. "Good news is no news," he remarked, noting that the department's achievements often competed with various other issues for public attention. He expressed concern over the spread of disinformation on social media, which complicates governance and public discourse.

Despite these hurdles, Buttigieg takes pride in the department's success in reducing roadway deaths by over 5.6% since 2021, an achievement he hopes will be recognized in the broader context of his work.

Future Aspirations

Looking forward, Buttigieg is considering a more personally fulfilling path, including potentially enrolling at Northwestern Michigan College to pursue a pilot's license through their aviation program. He expressed a desire to connect more deeply with ideas and students, indicating an interest in engaging with educational opportunities.

"I got what I asked for for Christmas, which is a splitting maul and a new axe," he humorously shared, hinting at plans to enjoy more time outdoors chopping wood. More importantly, Buttigieg looks forward to spending quality time with family, making up for the demands that his political career placed on his personal life.

Legacy and Hope

Buttigieg hopes to leave a lasting impact through the infrastructure projects initiated during his tenure. He envisions a future where he can show his children the tangible results of his work and say, "I worked on that, and that’s one of the reasons why I was working so hard back when you were really little." This sentiment underscores his commitment to building a legacy that will benefit future generations.

As Buttigieg steps into the next chapter of his life, he remains optimistic about the future and is eager to pursue new challenges and opportunities. For those who have followed his journey, his story continues to be one of innovation, dedication, and a deep commitment to public service.
