Pedro Pascal Condemns JK Rowling for Her Celebration of Anti-Trans Ruling
Renowned actor and fervent supporter of trans rights, Pedro Pascal, did not hold back in his criticism of JK Rowling following her recent social media post. Pascal expressed his dismay and anger after the Harry Potter author celebrated a controversial decision by the U.K. Supreme Court that impacts the recognition of trans women under the 2010 Equality Act.
The court's ruling stated that trans women should not be legally recognized as women under the Equality Act of 2010. In response, Rowling shared a photograph of herself, appearing triumphant and carefree, overlooking an oceanic vista with a cocktail in one hand and a cigar in the other. Her caption, "I love it when a plan comes together," combined with hashtags referencing the Supreme Court and women's rights, left no ambiguity about her stance on the ruling.
Pascal, known for his outspoken support of the trans community, was visibly upset by Rowling's action. He responded to an Instagram reel criticizing Rowling's remarks, created by writer and activist Tariq Ra’ouf. Pascal commented on the post, denouncing Rowling's behavior as "awful disgusting SH*T" and "heinous LOSER behavior." This was not the first time Pascal has publicly supported trans rights, often speaking out in support of his sister, Lux Pascal, who is a trans actress and activist. On Instagram, Pascal has previously stated, “A world without trans people has never existed and never will.”
Further detailing his thoughts, Pascal added, "I can’t think of anything more vile and small and pathetic than terrorizing the smallest, most vulnerable community of people who want nothing from you, except the right to exist." His words echoed the sentiment felt by many in the LGBTQ+ community who were disturbed by the court's ruling and Rowling's reaction.
In his Instagram post, Ra’ouf himself did not mince words, likening Rowling's actions to "some serious Voldemort villain sh*t." He accused Rowling of being "proud of all of the work she’s been doing over the last few years to stoke hatred and fear into the general public about a very small minority population that’s already some of the most misunderstood people on the earth."
Ra’ouf's call to action was clear as he urged his followers to boycott everything related to Harry Potter, aiming to send a strong message to Rowling and her collaborators that "that awful disgusting sh*t, that has consequences." This call for a boycott underscores the deep divisions that have emerged over issues of trans rights and representation.
The Supreme Court ruling itself was the result of a challenge brought by the anti-trans organization For Women Scotland against the Scottish government's policies. The case focused on a 2018 bill passed by the Scottish Parliament advocating for gender balance on public sector boards. The law allowed trans women with a gender recognition certificate (GRC) to be counted among women for the purpose of these quotas. However, the ruling has now overturned this understanding, sparking outrage and concern among trans rights advocates.
Scottish Trans leader Vic Valentine criticized the decision, stating that it “reverses twenty years of understanding on how the law recognizes trans men and women with Gender Recognition Certificates.” This sentiment was shared by many in the trans community and its allies, who view the ruling as a significant setback for trans rights in the U.K.
As the debate around trans rights continues to unfold, the voices of allies like Pedro Pascal remain crucial. By publicly challenging influential figures such as JK Rowling, Pascal and others like him are working to ensure that the rights and existence of trans individuals are recognized and respected.
