In a compelling new documentary entitled Pee-wee as Himself, the late Paul Reubens, famously known for his portrayal of the charismatic Pee-wee Herman, posthumously revealed that he was gay. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, explores Reubens' complex relationship with his sexuality and his career.
The documentary delves into Reubens' decision to retreat into the closet as his career as Pee-wee Herman took off. Despite initially being open about his sexuality, Reubens explains in the film that the pressures of fame prompted him to conceal his true self.
"I was secretive about my sexuality even to my friends," Reubens admits in the documentary, describing his struggle with self-hatred and the demands of self-preservation. "I was conflicted about sexuality. But fame was way more complicated."
Reubens’ story is not isolated. Many public figures have faced similar challenges, balancing personal identity with public perception. In Reubens' case, his choice to hide his sexuality was influenced by both personal feelings and professional aspirations.
At one point in his life, Reubens was open about his relationship with a man named Guy. However, as his career progressed, he felt the need to suppress this part of himself. "I was out of the closet, and then I went back in the closet," Reubens reflects. "I wasn’t pursuing the Paul Reubens career. I was pursuing the Pee-wee Herman career."
Guy, who eventually died of AIDS, was a source of inspiration for Reubens, particularly in shaping the Pee-wee Herman character. Throughout his career, Reubens had "many, many secret relationships," indicating the personal sacrifices he made for the sake of his public image.
Reubens passed away in 2023 at 70, after a prolonged battle with cancer. His legacy as an "unapologetically odd, decidedly queer-coded performer" who delighted audiences with his offbeat humor remains intact. Despite never officially coming out during his lifetime, Reubens became a beloved icon within the LGBTQ+ community.
Reubens' career was not without controversy. The actor addressed these challenges in the documentary, including his 1991 arrest for indecent exposure. He emphasized his desire to create a documentary that portrayed both the highs and lows of his life, aiming to reveal his true self to the public.
"More than anything," Reubens states, "the reason I wanted to make a documentary was for people to see who I really am and how painful and dreadful it was to be labeled something I wasn’t. To be labeled a pariah; to have people be scared of you or untrusting… My whole career, everything I did and wrote, was based in love."
Reubens also addresses a particularly painful moment when he was unjustly labeled a pedophile, altering the course of his life and career. "The moment I heard someone label me as — I’m just going to say it — a pedophile, I knew it was going to change everything moving forward and backwards."
In 2001, Reubens faced additional scrutiny when he was charged with possession of child pornography, a claim he vehemently contested. The charges were ultimately dropped in 2004, with Reubens pleading guilty to a lesser charge for obscenity. He described his extensive collection as "vintage erotica," insisting that the allegations were a result of misinterpretations and biases.
The documentary suggests that homophobia played a significant role in Reubens' legal troubles. His publicist, Kelly Bush Novak, described the situation as a "homophobic witch hunt," highlighting the societal challenges and prejudices Reubens faced as a public figure.
Despite the controversies, Reubens' comedic genius and unique portrayal of Pee-wee Herman endeared him to fans worldwide. His ability to bring humor and joy while subtly challenging societal norms remains one of his most significant contributions to entertainment.
On the eve of his passing, Reubens recorded a poignant audio message for the documentary. He expressed his wish for people to understand the challenges of being unfairly labeled and judged, stating, "I wanted to talk about and have some understanding of what it’s like to be labeled a pariah, to have people scared of you, or unsure of you, or untrusting, or to look at what your intentions are through some kind of filter that’s not true."
Reubens' story is a powerful reminder of the difficult paths many LGBTQ+ individuals have walked, navigating personal identity amidst public scrutiny. His courage in sharing his truth posthumously sheds light on the complexities of fame, identity, and societal expectations.
Reubens' legacy as Pee-wee Herman continues to bring joy to fans, and his story offers valuable insights into the often hidden struggles of LGBTQ+ figures in the entertainment industry.
