Rutger published: Park Sung-hoon Discusses Portrayal of Transgender Character in "Squid Game" Season 2

In an insightful discussion with local journalists, South Korean actor Park Sung-hoon shared his thoughts on portraying a transgender character in the upcoming second season of the immensely popular series Squid Game. The casting choice has been a topic of conversation, with many raising concerns about the decision to cast a cisgender actor in a trans role. Despite this, the inclusion of a transgender character in a major South Korean show is seen as a significant step forward.

Approach to the Role

Park Sung-hoon, known for his previous roles in various South Korean dramas, emphasized his commitment to portraying the character, Hyun-ju, with respect and authenticity. "I approached the role with caution," Park explained, highlighting his efforts to avoid any exaggerated or stereotypical portrayals. "I consulted with members of the transgender community to ensure Hyun-ju would not come across as a caricature," he added, according to local media sources.

Park noted the collaborative nature of his work with the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk. "Hwang and I agreed on the importance of maintaining the character's emotional authenticity," Park stated. He reflected on the decision not to overly alter his natural voice, which is quite deep, as a way to preserve the character's genuine emotional expression.

Character Development

The development of Hyun-ju’s character was a thoughtful process that involved close collaboration with the show’s costume and makeup teams. "The short bangs were something I personally suggested," Park revealed, illustrating his investment in the character's appearance.

A particularly poignant scene required Park to convey the emotional depth of Hyun-ju's relationship with her mother. "Hwang wanted the emotion to come through genuinely," Park remarked, emphasizing the delicate balance between emotion and restraint.

Park also shared insights into his upbringing and how it influenced his approach to the role. "Having been raised with two older sisters, I naturally picked up certain feminine traits," he shared. This personal background contributed to a nuanced portrayal of Hyun-ju, adding depth to the character.

Director's Perspective

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, addressed the casting choice in interviews, expressing his initial intention to cast a transgender actress. "Unfortunately, in Korea, there are very few actors who are openly trans or gay," Hwang noted, shedding light on the challenges within the industry.

Hwang explained the significance of including a transgender character in the series. "The characters in Squid Game often represent marginalized groups," he said. "In today's Korean society, gender minorities are often not widely accepted, which is why I felt it was important to include Hyun-ju as a transgender woman."

Despite the casting controversy, the presence of a transgender character in a mainstream South Korean series marks an important moment for representation. Both Hwang and Park aim to handle the character with care, striving to contribute positively to the ongoing dialogue about LGBTQ+ issues in Korea and beyond.

As the show continues to garner international acclaim, the inclusion of diverse narratives signifies a broader shift towards inclusivity in media. By opening up discussions around these topics, Squid Game season two hopes to resonate with audiences worldwide, offering both entertainment and a platform for reflection on social issues.
