A parent's journey: Understanding and embracing transitions

Teaming up with filmmaker Brooke Sebold, PFLAG has created a moving five-part video series called *I Changed My Mind*. These brief documentaries offer a deeply personal look at stories highlighting parents' evolving understanding as they support their transgender children. It's a heartfelt journey from confusion and apprehension toward acceptance and love.

“Stories have this amazing ability,” Sebold said, “to break down stereotypes, connect people, and spark change.” The series brings these transformations vividly alive, showing what happens when folks listen, reflect, and open their hearts.

With genuine stories, *I Changed My Mind* aims not just at spreading empathy but also at encouraging people, even in a divided political climate, plagued with anti-trans rhetoric. The goal? To connect different viewpoints and show how people can grow, challenge their biases, and adopt more open perspectives.

Ria's revelation: From denial toward acceptance

The first video, which came out on September 15, tells Ria's story. When her son Kane came out as transgender, she initially reacted with disbelief, certain she knew his gender identity better than he did. Despite her background in gender studies, Ria had her "ahhh moment" that sparked deep self-reflection. She asked herself, “What am I doing?” This introspection pushed her toward acceptance, leading her not only toward embracing her son but also examining her own sexuality. It turns out that life, with all its twists, calls us all toward openness and growth.

Sue's transformation: From resistance toward love

On October 7, PFLAG shared Sue's transformative story. A staunch Republican, Sue homeschooled her kids, hoping they'd stay away from "indoctrination," and she protested against Pride events. But when her youngest came out as gay and later as trans, her entire worldview shifted. Initially, she leaned on conversion therapy—a practice many medical organizations condemn—causing harm and distress in her child.

Coming face-to-face with her past actions, Sue chose a different path, even if it meant leaving her church and her community behind. Her story captures what it truly takes: moving from deeply held views toward genuine support and love.

Deedee's dilemma: From superficiality toward genuine support

Deedee, as a single mom, shows us that internal conflicts are part and parcel when a child transitions. While she outwardly affirmed her trans son's identity with correct pronouns, deep down, she hoped it was a phase. It took a lot t introspection before she realized her own barriers.

“I came face-to-face with my failure,” Deedee admitted. “I had a chance, a real chance, at supporting him, and I wasn't seizing it. It was tough accepting that, but essential so we could both truly move forward.”

Elton's endeavor: From personal loss toward activism

In its latest installment, we meet Elton. Raised on Navajo Nation, his activism journey began after his brother's passing. Now he leads as executive director at Two Spirit and Native LGBTQ+ Center, continuing a shared dream with his brother: busting myths around HIV/AIDS.

The series wraps up on December 9, leaving viewers with a resonant message: hope, understanding, and love can transcend all. It paints a picture where acceptance isn't just possible—it becomes a powerful catalyst.
