Rutger published: Over 70 LGBTQ+ Athletes Set to Compete in UEFA Women's Euro 2025

This summer, all eyes will be on Switzerland as it hosts a truly monumental event: UEFA Women's Euro 2025. It promises not just top-tier soccer but also a significant spotlight on LGBTQ+ representation, kicking off right after Pride Month. This perfect timing highlights an inspiring fusion where sports meet visibility and inclusivity.

Celebrating LGBTQ+ representation in women's soccer

Get ready because this year's tournament will feature a stunning 73 players who identify as LGBTQ+. That's about 20% out there on that pitch, showcasing their talents and proudly representing their identities. This marks a notable shift from previous tournaments and really speaks volumes about how far acceptance and visibility have come in women's soccer.

Enhancing visibility: a shift in representation

To put this in perspective, during last year's Women's World Cup, LGBTQ+ representation was roughly 13%. Compare that with now, and it's a clear uptick. The last Women's Euros in 2022 had England on top and drew a massive crowd — 365 million viewers worldwide! But this time, we'll see even more LGBTQ+ athletes shining brightly.

While women's soccer continues blazing a trail in inclusivity, it's worth noting that men's tournaments still have ground left. None came out publicly in recent men's Euros or World Cups. This contrast really turns a spotlight on women's soccer as a leader in sports inclusivity.

LGBTQ+ representation across countries

As Switzerland rolls out its welcome mat alongside its breathtaking landscapes, it also opens up a celebration on and off those soccer fields. Among 16 teams, Wales stands out with nine openly LGBTQ+ players, including stars like Jess Fishlock, Lily Woodham, and Rachel Rowe, who recently enjoyed Pride Cymru festivities.

Many players marked personal milestones during Pride Month with weddings that sing both love and pride. Among them are Spain's Irene Paredes and Alba Redondo and Dutch stars Danielle van de Donk and Ilze van der Zanden.

England's Beth Mead paired off against Vivianne Miedema from Netherlands adds a dramatic flair. Imagine witnessing teammates in life potentially battling it out on-field. Talk about drama!

Progress in sports: visibility matters

There's been progress, but work remains. Countries like Italy and Poland haven't yet adopted equal marriage laws—yet players like Italy's Annamaria Serturini are leading by example, stepping forward with same-sex civil unions as they pave ways forward.

The impact visibility has in sports shouldn't be underestimated. Remember when Pernille Harder embraced Magdalena Eriksson in 2019? Moments like that resonate globally, inspiring countless fans.

UEFA has been supportive historically toward inclusion. They've highlighted love and acceptance through their platforms. But will they recognize Pride Month again this year? Will they allow rainbow armbands? Time will tell.

Creating an LGBTQ+ athlete roster

Drawing up a list wasn't easy. It involved scrutinizing public profiles and legitimate news sources. This list includes many who've battled it out before—Olympics, World Cup—you name it.

While some athletes embrace their identities openly, others prefer privacy. We've only included those publicly out, respecting everyone involved. But as this tournament plays out, who knows how much bigger that number might get?

Countries with openly LGBTQ+ players

Here are some teams featuring open LGBTQ+ athletes:

Belgium: Femke Bastiaen, Jassina Blom, Laura Deloose, Tine De Caigny, and others.

Denmark: Pernille Harder, Janni Thomsen

England: Lucy Bronze, Jess Carter, Lauren Hemp, Beth Mead, Anna Moorhouse

Finland: Natalia Kuikka, Tinja-Riikka Korpela, Linda Sallstrom, Anna Tamminen

France: Maelle Lakrar, Melvine Malard, Pauline Peyraud-Magninand, Constance Picaud, Sandie Toletti

And so many more from around Europe—all adding diversity and richness that make this tournament something special!

UEFA Women's Euro 2025 won't just be about stunning soccer moments; it'll push forward equality and lend visibility where it matters most. Fans, athletes—everyone—will feel inspired as history unfolds, both on and off that field.
