Rutger published: Over 100 Convicted Under Russia's Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws

The situation in Russia has taken a worrying turn as more than 100 people have been convicted under harsh anti-LGBTQ+ laws, accused unjustly under "extremism" charges. These convictions come as a result after a strict law was introduced in January 2024 that essentially criminalizes any form LGBTQ+ activism, marking a serious blow against human rights in Russia.

What's happening with Russia's anti-LGBTQ+ laws?

According Human Rights Watch, there have been 101 convictions from Russia's legal system related accusations tied with "extremism" linked involvement with international LGBTQ+ movements or even displaying their symbols. This crackdown comes on heels a 2023 decision by Russia's Supreme Court that banned LGBTQ+ activism, further marginalizing an already vulnerable community.

Out those cases, 98 were administrative or minor offenses, but some led criminal charges. This major crackdown violates free speech, association, discrimination rights, representing a blatant human rights violation in Russia.
