Out Actor Ariel Neydavoud Shines in 'Fiddler on the Roof'

From now through January 25th, theatre-goers have the chance to witness a captivating performance of the classic musical "Fiddler on the Roof" at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia. The production features the talented out actor Ariel Neydavoud, who takes on the role of Perchick, a revolutionary student bringing new ideas to the town of Anatevka.

Neydavoud's portrayal of Perchick is both relatable and inspiring. As a character, Perchick challenges the traditional values of Anatevka's residents, a theme that resonates deeply with Neydavoud. He shares, "I’m Jewish on both sides, but I’m also queer, a first-generation American, and a person of color. I never feel like I belong to a single community. That’s what has emboldened my inner activist to speak up and challenge ideas that I don’t necessarily buy into."

The opportunity to work alongside celebrated actor Douglas Sills, who stars as Tevya, has been a rewarding experience for Neydavoud. Tevya's struggles with maintaining cultural traditions while facing anti-Semitism and expulsion mirror Perchick's own journey of challenging societal norms. The show features iconic songs like "If I Were a Rich Man," "Tradition," and "Sunrise, Sunset," which add depth and emotion to the story.

Neydavoud, who grew up in the vibrant West Los Angeles neighborhood known as Tehrangeles, has always been passionate about performing. He recalls, "It’s like I came out of the womb tap dancing," crediting his mother, a pianist and composer, as his first accompanist. His early experiences in theater camps and schools helped him embrace his identity and pursue a career in the arts.

In an interview, Neydavoud reflected on his journey into showbiz, noting that each new role and production brings unique challenges and learning opportunities. His role as Perchick has been no exception. Despite Perchick's songs being in a baritone range, Neydavoud, a first tenor, embraced the challenge with the help of director Joe Calarco, who encouraged him to explore his lower register.

The production's choice to stage "Fiddler on the Roof" in the round brings an intimacy and immediacy to the performance. Neydavoud explains, "It’s performed with a dining table at its center, inviting the audience to join the residents of Anatevka. The show’s moments of joy like the betrothal song ‘To Life (L’Chaim)’ are intensified, and the more difficult scenes are made more poignant."

When asked about how his diverse identity influences his career, Neydavoud acknowledges the benefits of being ethnically ambiguous. "After ‘Hamilton’ and the pandemic there was more of a shift toward authenticity. I try to steer toward playing Middle Eastern, Southwest Asian, Jewish, and mixed-race characters without being too prescriptive," he says.

Looking ahead, Neydavoud dreams of playing the Emcee in "Cabaret" and directing a Middle Eastern cast in "Godspell." He envisions portraying Jesus and the disciples as Bohemian idealists under an oppressive regime, bringing fresh perspectives to these roles.

"Fiddler on the Roof" remains a timeless piece, exploring themes of displacement, persecution, and cultural identity that resonate with many, including queer audiences. Neydavoud adds, "It hits home with just about anyone who’s ever felt othered, making it especially meaningful for today’s audiences."

Don’t miss the chance to see Ariel Neydavoud and the talented cast of "Fiddler on the Roof" as they bring this powerful story to life. Tickets are available starting at $47 on Sigtheatre.org.
