Life really threw some curveballs our direction before Dinushka and I found ourselves on this incredible path. Our dream was becoming a reality—a family with three. The road was paved with love but also filled with uncertainties, especially when it came time for Dinushka's big decision—telling her parents.
Jonathan was off in Virginia with his family, giving Dinushka and me some much-needed time together. Our evenings were filled with good wine and even better conversations about our dreams and plans. We talked about our careers, shared our hopes, and really took advantage of that alone time. It was like we were building a little cocoon where our love could grow even stronger.
For Dinushka, coming out wasn't a question—it was a certainty. She knew she had to be true to herself and her family. But knowing when was still a struggle. As she embraced her identity more, keeping it from her family weighed her down. We both realized this step was essential, especially if we wanted Jonathan in our plans.
One night, she asked, "What if my parents don't accept us?" I tried my best to reassure her. "They'll come around," I said. "Once you tell them, their love will follow." She'd shared so many stories about her family, stories that filled me with hope. Even though I hadn't met them, I could sense their deep love through her words.
We had our own worries—mine included finding a job and a bigger apartment to accommodate our growing family. Despite these challenges, my bond with Dinushka felt nothing short of magical. We were each other's rock, providing support and understanding we both had longed for.
There were also legal concerns about Jonathan. While I had residential custody, Dinushka had no legal standing. Jonathan's father, Karl, hadn't shown any interest, so we hoped it would stay that way.
Our first Valentine's Day was sweet and simple. I had planned takeout from our favorite pizza spot and a bottle of Dinushka's favorite wine. In my rush, I forgot ice cream, and when I came back with it, she was crying, clutching the card I wrote her.
"I thought you left me," she said, and in that vulnerable moment, we grew closer. I promised her I wasn't going anywhere.
Her past, filled with loneliness and bullying, left scars. She had used her faith to cope, and as she shared more, her vulnerability encouraged me to open up. We learned not only to trust each other with smiles but with tears as well.
With Jonathan away, we worked hard to fortify our relationship. We knew we couldn't let past pains or silly spats drive us apart. Our goal was clear: bring Jonathan back and complete our family.
Thankfully, I landed a new job in Midtown Manhattan, as an admin assistant in a nonprofit. It was a step closer to bringing Jonathan home, even though commuting from the Bronx was tough. Every call with him was a reminder of how temporary his stay with my grandparents was meant to be, no matter how much they suggested he stay longer.
"No, I'll bring him home soon. It really is temporary," I insisted. I was grateful for their help but determined to reunite us.
One step at a time, we tackled life together. Our love, unyielding and honest, was our greatest ally. Facing fears and embracing truths, we forged a path for a stronger family.
