Rutger published: Opinion: Why Moderate Politicians Are Undermining Democratic Principles

Lately, a noticeable shift has been happening in how things work in Washington, particularly in Congress. Politics seem more about muscle than compromise, and this change raises some real worries about democracy being weakened in favor an authoritarian style. One big reason this might be happening? The moderate politicians who either act or don't act, and in doing so, end up making room unintentionally (or sometimes intentionally)for more extreme policies.

moderates' pivotal role in a split political climate

Moderates used be political deal-makers, kind bridging sides by negotiating compromises. But politics these days has become sharply divided, leaving less room moderate middle ground. Instead, some moderates seem appease their party's extreme wings, sometimes at their own moral expense.

Take a look at what's happening in U.S. Senate—party loyalty's like never before. The fear backlash or losing elections often pushes moderate Senators support policies they might usually vote against. This tunnel vision isn't healthy and works against democracy's need check balances.

choosing between fitting in and following one' conscience

When moderates get behind extreme standpoints, they often say it keeps them politically alive. But this justification can damage democracy. When political staying power takes priority over leading with integrity, it chips away at democratic standards and lets power concentrate in hands few.

Sure, politicians want stick around enough make difference. But compromising on key values comes with a hefty price. If being a moderate means doing nothing or quietly agreeing with bad policy, then these moderates aren't bringing balance or reason like they should.

when moderates' silence speaks volumes

Moderate inaction isn't just theory—it leads real impacts hurting millions. Policies restricting freedoms or hurting marginalized groups often slip through when moderates stay quiet or neutral.

Think about it; laws infringing on LGBTQ+ rights might pass simply because moderates prioritize party unity over fairness or equality. Ignoring such issues not only normalizes them but also encourages those pushing even more drastic changes.

charting a new course: what moderates can do better

To bring back trust in democracy, moderates need reclaim their role as voices reason and fairness. They've got stand firm on their beliefs, even if means dealing political backlash. This takes a certain bravery and dedication that goes beyond personal goals.

Moderates should make an effort connect with their constituents, ensure their actions truly reflect varied views people they represent. By doing so, they can help restore faith political process, showing compromise and teamwork are indeed possible and essential.

wrapping it up: let principles lead, not politics

Democracy thrives on leaders who choose principles over politics. Moderates play unique, critical role keeping balance. By choosing their conscience instead following party lines mindlessly, they can steer nation toward a fairer, better future.

In a time when stakes couldn't be higher, sticking with one's beliefs isn't just commendable—it's absolutely necessary. Only with this kind courage can democracy be protected and strengthened future generations.
