Yared Nuguse: A true champion on and off track
Yared Nuguse has started 2025 with a bang, showing everyone what he's made by preparing hard and fastening his spikes tighter than ever before his upcoming challenge — a meet in Philadelphia. This race marks his debut in this year's Grand Slam Track season, and Nuguse has already shown his incredible talent.
At just 25, Louisville's own has captured hearts and eyes everywhere, taking home silver medals in both Kingston and Miami's 1,500-meter events. Those impressive runs have added $55,000 in prize money under his belt. Nuguse also clocked a personal best in his 800-meter race and, if briefly, held onto an indoor mile record until Jakub Ingebrigtsen scooped it back just a few days later.
Off track: Embracing personal milestones
But Nuguse isn't just making waves with his running. Recently, he opened up about his personal life, sharing a special milestone — his relationship with his boyfriend, Julian Falco. March marked their one-year anniversary, a moment he celebrated on Instagram, proudly joining Team USA's group as an openly LGBTQ athlete.
The announcement was met with warmth and support, as he stood alongside other openly LGBTQ track athletes like Nico Young and Trey Cunningham. His bronze at last summer's Paris Olympics, just barely missing silver by a hair's breadth, only added more shine.
Embracing authenticity and support
Nuguse's decision was deeply personal. "That post was more important than just telling people," he told AP. "Knowing I can be at peace with myself and all my quirks makes a huge difference."
His self-acceptance extends beyond himself, reflected in his strong relationship with Julian, who provides endless support and happiness. Julian's got a neuroscience degree, plays music, and stands by Nuguse no matter what. "His support means everything," Nuguse said on a podcast. "It's incredible having someone who knows me so well, having my back."
Beyond racing: A passion beyond life
When he's not running, Nuguse has a special bond with animals, especially his pet tortoise, Tyro. Tyro, getting his own fame with appearances on Instagram, even had a cameo with Elmo!
Looking ahead, Nuguse's eyes are set on Tokyo's World Athletics Championships this September, with important stops in Philadelphia, L.A., and Eugene. Thinking long-term, he aims at competing in L.A.'s 2028 Olympics before diving back fully in studying and becoming an orthodontist.
Despite being more on introverted and reflective side, Nuguse talks openly about therapy's significance and how his Ethiopian heritage, with his dad once having been a refugee, shapes him. Growing up as one in a six-pack sibling lineup, family and personal growth are key pillars.
As Nuguse gears up in Philly and beyond, he's living proof that coming out adds wings. He thrives in "just being completely comfortable" with himself and his choices. With Julian by his side, family cheering, fans rallying, Yared Nuguse defines what it means not just a track champion, but a beacon in being fully authentic and resilient.
