Rutger published: Olympic Love Story: Two Athletes Share Heartwarming Engagement

Sports enthusiasts and fans of love stories alike are celebrating a heartwarming moment from the Olympic games, as two U.S. athletes announced their engagement in an adorable proposal video shared on social media.

Hilary Knight, a celebrated hockey player, proposed to Brittany Bowe, a talented speed skater, in the Olympic Village. The touching moment was captured on video as Knight knelt with a ring in hand, and Bowe, with an expression of joy and excitement, accepted with a nod before they embraced. Bowe enthusiastically displayed her new ring to the camera while sharing a hug with her fiancée.

The couple shared the proposal video on Instagram, with the caption, "Olympics brought us together. This one made us forever," a beautiful nod to the beginning of their relationship four years prior at the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Adding to the excitement, the couple's impressive Olympic careers are worth mentioning. They have collectively represented the United States in nine Olympic Games, where they have garnered six medals. The Italian Winter Games might mark their last appearance as competitors.

In an interview with People magazine, Bowe fondly recalled their first date during the 2022 Winter Games. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their date involved walking around the Olympic village in face masks. "A very unique way to meet someone, but it was also kind of cool because we felt like we were in this bubble," Bowe noted. "We didn’t have the family, the friends, no outside distractions. And we really had a lot of time just to get to know each other."

Multiple athletes and personalities from the sports world expressed their joy for the couple's engagement. Former Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon shared his excitement, stating, "OMGGGG I WANT TO FLIP TABLES I WANT TO SCREAM I WANT TO CRY. I am also OBSESSED with how gay it is to propose in sweats. I LOVE YOU GIRLS!"

Billie Jean King, the legendary tennis pro and advocate, also congratulated the pair, referencing her wife, Ilana Kloss, in her message of support.

Bowe and Knight's engagement wasn't the only romantic storyline at the Games. Belgium's Kim Meylemans and Brazil's Nicole Silveira, both skeleton competitors who married each other last year, shared a loving embrace on the ice after their event. Further adding to the romantic atmosphere, Switzerland’s slopestyle skier Mathilde Gremaud celebrated her gold medal win with a kiss from her girlfriend, Austrian mountain bike athlete Vali Höll.

This year’s Winter Games have been an iconic stage for LGBTQ+ athletes. With 49 openly queer athletes from 14 countries participating, they have already won a combined total of four gold and two bronze medals. These achievements place queer Olympians in a commendable sixth position among the countries with the most medals.

The representation and achievements of LGBTQ+ athletes at the Olympics are a testament to the growing acceptance and celebration of diversity in sports. These athletes not only compete at the highest levels but also serve as role models and inspirations for future generations.

As the Winter Games continue, the love story of Hilary Knight and Brittany Bowe will undoubtedly be a cherished memory for many, illustrating the beautiful intersection of love and sport. Their story, along with those of other LGBTQ+ athletes, highlights the spirit of inclusivity and unity that the Olympics strive to uphold.
