In a controversial move ahead of her return to competition, Imane Khelif, the Olympic gold medalist boxer from Algeria, has been mandated to undergo gender testing by World Boxing, the recently established world governing authority for amateur boxing. This directive comes as part of a new policy aimed at ensuring fair competition within the sport.
The announcement was made last Friday, when World Boxing issued a statement outlining its upcoming policy on "Sex, Age, and Weight." This policy is designed to safeguard the well-being of all athletes while striving to maintain a level playing field for both male and female competitors.
The statement further specified that Khelif would be required to complete gender testing to participate in upcoming global boxing events. Until she complies with this requirement, she will be barred from competing at any such events. This decision is stirring debate across the sporting community.
In conjunction with the announcement, World Boxing officials have communicated directly with the Algerian Boxing Federation, sending a formal letter on May 30, detailing Khelif’s required compliance with the new policy. However, there has yet to be any public response from either Khelif or her national federation regarding the directive or the broader regulations being introduced.
Both Khelif and Taiwanese champion Lin Yu-ting faced gender verification scrutiny last year, following tests administered prior to the 2023 World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA), the former governing body responsible for Olympic boxing oversight. The IBA was later stripped of its governance by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to accusations of corruption, including issues around transparency and due process related to Khelif’s and Lin’s cases.
These past controversies have placed Khelif under intense public scrutiny, with unfounded allegations from anti-transgender activists speculating about her gender identity. Despite these challenges, Khelif achieved significant victories, culminating in her securing a gold medal with a triumphant win over China’s Yang Liu.
World Boxing’s initiative marks it as the second global sporting body to reinstate such testing, following World Athletics, which announced a similar program set to commence before their upcoming world championships in Tokyo.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Khelif remains resolute about her future in the sport. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, she expressed her unwavering commitment to defending her Olympic title at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She articulated her vision to continue inspiring young athletes worldwide, despite potential barriers, including political ones.
The U.S. State Department recently indicated possible restrictions on her entry into the country, referencing a presidential executive order from February 5 that would prevent transgender women from participating in sports within the United States. Khelif has addressed these concerns directly, clarifying in an interview with ITV that she is not transgender and that this policy does not pertain to her.
“The U.S. President issued a decision related to transgender policies in America. I am not transgender,” Khelif stated. “This does not concern me, and it does not intimidate me. I defend with everything I have this gold medal. I aim to achieve even greater results and to send powerful messages that serve as life lessons for young people. I want to be a source of motivation and a positive example for anyone who looks up to me.”
Khelif’s story resonates with many in the athletic community, not only for her sporting prowess but also for her resilience and dedication to serving as a role model.
