Rutger published: NWSL Player Elizabeth Eddy Advocates for Policy Changes Regarding Trans and Intersex Women in Soccer

Elizabeth Eddy, an experienced defender with over ten years in Angel City FC and a three-time championship winner in NWSL, has found herself in a heated debate within soccer circles. She's recently brought her thoughts on a hot topic: should transgender and intersex women have a place in soccer? Eddy's in favor, but she insists on verification testing, arguing that current rules just don't cut it.

Looking at clarity in women's soccer policies

Recently, Eddy didn't hold back as she expressed concern over what she sees as muddy eligibility rules in pro soccer. "Without a clear understanding about who exactly can play in our league, we risk losing its identity and drive," she said. This murkiness, according, adds fuel, igniting disputes and casting doubt on whether intersex and transgender athletes should participate.

She also pointed out how this lack can lead fans astray, sometimes unleashing harassment on players. Orlando FC's Barbra Banda knows this all too well, facing ugly, transphobic, and racist comments. Banda, a top-notch Zambian player, was kept out unfairly from 2022's African Cup due because a gender verification process went awry.

Diving deeper: current policies and Eddy's take on inclusivity

According, NWSL, following FIFA's 2015 guidelines, requires trans women athletes declare their gender identity and complete at least a year on hormone replacement therapy. They must also hit specific testosterone levels or consider procedures like a gonadal surgery. To Eddy, these steps just aren't enough and she's got some ideas on how we can do better. "Maybe we should consider a rule where every player needs be born with ovaries, sort, as FA does," she said, referencing England's governing body.

She also mentioned a hotly debated SRY gene test. This test, once brushed aside by International Olympic Committee (IOC), seems set return 2025's World Athletics championships. Dr. Andrew Sinclair, who discovered this gene, said it's flawed—it only spots if gene exists, not what it's doing or individual hormones are like.

The wider impact: inclusivity in soccer's future

The discussion about trans and intersex athletes goes beyond soccer, dipping toes politics and ethics. Eddy noted politicians from all sides are speaking up, urging collaborative talks craft balanced solutions. She floated idea that NWSL could be a trailblazer, considering an "open" category in soccer, pushing competition towards inclusivity.

"Just like we fought hard create spaces women sports, must now honor that promise and ensure NWSL remains league women," she said. She knows this shift isn't easy—it'll take "time, space, creativity"—and she calls everyone work together as league adapts.

As debate rolls on, it sheds light on challenges and complexities in achieving fairness and inclusivity in sports. NWSL and other leaders have an uphill task in resolving these tricky issues while keeping spirit competition and respect alive among all athletes.

By tackling these pressing concerns and striving transparent policies, NWSL could set a worldwide standard, creating an arena where all athletes compete with dignity and equality.
