Nova Gregory: Paving new paths in fencing

It all began in 2008, inside a rented YMCA gym. That was where Nova Gregory first fell in love with fencing. From school competitions all through becoming a varsity athlete in college, Nova's passion has been unwavering. Even after moving far from traditional fencing hotspots in New England, Nova's dedication never wavered. They've made countless early morning trips, heading all over just so they could train in Milwaukee. It's a testament, really, not only their love but also their pursuit and drive.

Fencing as a reflection on identity

For Nova, fencing isn't just a sport—it's a mirror reflecting their identity and expression as a nonbinary person. Nova's journey through boys' competitions in their youth, then on Vassar College's varsity men's team, and now in USA Fencing's men's events, speaks volumes. Yet, things are evolving. With their transition, Nova's preparing not just physically but mentally, too, as they get ready join women's competitions soon. It's a bold move that stands in defiance against traditional norms.

Since November 2024, Nova's been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), an essential step required by USA Fencing if transgender athletes want move categories. This period has had its share difficulties—dysphoria and misgendering, among them. But through it all, fencing has been a sanctuary, offering escape and empowerment in equal measure.

Building a supportive community

Nova's found their tribe in a gym dedicated funding Type 1 diabetes research. It's more than just a place train; it's a haven where inclusivity thrives. Thanks in part partnerships The OUT Foundation, which supports Nova's nutrition and training, Nova can focus on their sport and self-expression.

The fencing community has been a source encouragement, embracing diversity in gender identity. Nova trains athletes from all genders and ages, including Olympians, Paralympians, and Vet World Team members. This welcoming spirit reflects American fencing's broader commitment; USA Fencing has recognized Nova's chosen name, installing programs that open doors nonbinary participants. Even in face criticism, this commitment inclusion doesn't waver.

Inspiring future generations

Nova's journey in fencing has been dotted with remarkable milestones. As a full-time coach at an inclusive Massachusetts club, Nova's helping guide LGBTQIA+ youth in creating a nurturing, empowering space. In 2024, they coached an athlete who took home silver at Veteran World Championships in Dubai—an achievement that shines brightly against backdrop region's stance LGBTQ rights.

Breaking barriers as a transgender fencing master

In April, Nova achieved something momentous: becoming first openly transgender fencing master after defending a thesis on trans fencers. At Five Points Fencing Academy, Nova's building success athletes from all walks life, finding joy in competing and coaching.

Although what lies ahead isn't certain, Nova's dedication fencing, along with newfound interests like powerlifting, ensures a life filled with purpose. Whether as a competitor or coach, Nova's committed helping others discover themselves and grow.

Calling Hanover, Mass. home, Nova Gregory (they/them) isn't just a fencer and coach—they're a trailblazer. Having mentored athletes toward medal victories on national and global stages, Nova stands as a beacon courage and resilience. They're lighting path others who dare carve their own unique journeys.
