The entertainment industry continues to see groundbreaking transformations as nonbinary artist Jack Haven, previously known for their role as Casey Gardner on the hit Netflix series Atypical, announces their name change. This significant update, shared on Instagram, highlights their choice to honor their great-great uncle, Haven Gillespie, the composer behind the timeless Christmas classic "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town." Haven's decision to adopt this new last name reflects both personal and familial significance in their journey of self-identity.
Haven carved a niche in Hollywood with their performances in projects like Irrational Man (2015), Downsizing (2017), and the heartfelt drama The Glass Castle (2017). However, it was their portrayal of Casey Gardner in Atypical, running from 2017 to 2021, that solidified their presence in the industry. Adding to their repertoire, Haven featured in Bombshell (2019) and Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020), showcasing their versatile acting prowess. The announcement of their name change comes as they continue to leave a remarkable imprint across diverse media.
In an Instagram post on January 20, Haven detailed their journey in choosing the name "Jack," which they had been experimenting with for over two years. Initially used in safe environments, the name resonated deeply during a workshop led by Iranian actor and director Saman Arastoo. Encouraged to embrace it even in challenging situations, Haven noted, "Saman said use it in dangerous spaces. So I use it in the men's bathroom." This powerful statement underscores Haven's courage and commitment to living authentically.
Beyond acting, Haven explores creativity in music. They released the song "Open Urself" under their new moniker late last year, further establishing their artistic identity. Haven's multifaceted talent has not gone unnoticed. Their outstanding performance in I Saw the TV Glow garnered critical acclaim and nominations, including a Gotham Awards nod for Outstanding Supporting Performance and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Performance.
Directed by transfeminine, nonbinary filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, I Saw the TV Glow became a standout feature, earning nine nominations at the 2025 Dorian Film Awards hosted by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics. These honors include Film of the Year and a Supporting Film Performance of the Year nomination for Haven, alongside a "We’re Wilde About You!" Rising Star Award nomination, underscoring their growing impact in the industry.
Importantly, the Gotham Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, and Dorian Awards do not segregate performance nominations by gender, reflecting a growing trend towards inclusivity. This approach aligns with Haven's own narrative, as they came out as queer in 2018 and publicly embraced their nonbinary identity in a now-deleted Instagram post in November 2019. They wrote, "I’m non-binary. Always felt a lil bit boy, lil bit girl, lil bit neither. Using they/them as of late n it feels right." This honesty and vulnerability resonate with audiences, amplifying their influence within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
Jack Haven's journey of self-discovery and artistic evolution stands as an inspiring testament to authenticity and courage. By sharing their story, Haven not only challenges societal norms but also fosters a more inclusive environment for all individuals exploring their identities. Their ongoing contributions to film and music, coupled with their advocacy for LGBTQ+ representation, continue to inspire many. As Haven steps into this new chapter, their legacy as both an artist and an advocate remains influential in reshaping industry narratives.
