Rutger published: Nigel Farage Criticizes Same-Sex Marriage Legislation: "I Didn't Support It"

A closer look at Nigel Farage's views on same-sex marriage

Nigel Farage, who's at helm at Reform UK, has once again made it clear that he's not on board with same-sex marriage becoming legal in Britain. In a chat on LBC with Nick Ferrari, Farage didn't hold back, saying he believes this legislation was "wrong" and slammed how it was introduced without a manifesto backing it up.

The debate around same-sex marriage

When Farage was pressed about same-sex marriage, legalized in 2013 with first ceremonies kicking off in 2014, he said, "It‘s a settled issue. I didn't support it. I thought it was wrong not putting it in a manifesto before bringing it out."

He didn't mince words about David Cameron's involvement, saying, "I was very surprised that David Cameron did that. I thought that civil partnerships were working well and fairly."

Worries over legal and religious impacts

Farage also flagged concerns about legal battles, especially with respect Church regarding Church in England. He warned, "We‘ re opening a very big can full worms here, with plenty big risks. I think Church England will have tough and unhappy time getting dragged through European courts."

Nigel Farage in historical context

Farage's views haven't wavered. Back in 2014, he opposed same-sex marriage saying, "I do not support same-sex marriage...while we're still under European Court Human Rights." He hinted that Brexit might allow a "sensible debate" on how same-sex marriages are handled in UK.

But his controversial opinions aren't limited just marriage equality. As UKIP leader in 2013, he defended members with "old-fashioned" views on homosexuality. And in 2019, he argued against admitting people with HIV citing immigration challenges.

Where does he really stand on LGBTQ+ rights?

Even with his divisive stance, Farage has said things that seem out place. He praised Margaret Thatcher's era as "real advancement" time gay people, yet defended Section 28, seen as anti-LGBTQ+ measure.

What Reform UK thinks

Under Farage, Reform UK echoes his thoughts policies. They're making waves in polls by surfacing issues like immigration, multiculturalism, and what they call "divisive 'woke' ideology." Their platform, "Our contract with you," takes a hard line against "transgender indoctrination" impacting kids negatively.

Wrapping up: The ongoing UK debate

Farage and Reform UK's positions keep igniting conversations around LGBTQ+ rights and political culture in UK. As these discussions keep shifting, Farage's voice remains a big part there conversation.
