Marzan had designed a special Sharks crest symbolizing community and inclusivity, featuring a shark swimming through a vibrant coral reef. The video was meant to celebrate the team’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
However, the positive message was met with negativity from a social media user who claimed that the LGBTQ+ community had no place in hockey. The troll’s comment, "There’s nothing further from a hockey fan than the LGBTQ community. Stop shoving it down our throats," quickly garnered attention but not in the way they might have hoped.
The response from the hockey community was overwhelming. Fans and players alike flooded the platform with messages of support, effectively silencing the negativity. One of the most poignant reactions came from a fan who shared an image of Sidney Crosby, a legendary NHL player, donning a Progress Pride jersey during a previous Pittsburgh Penguins Pride game.
The image of Crosby, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, resonated with many, amassing over 170,000 likes and 4 million views, showcasing the widespread acceptance and support within the hockey community.

Sharks defenseman Jake Walman addressed the importance of Pride Nights in the NHL, stating, "This day and age, a lot of messages get thrown around but personally, I have a couple family members that are happy that I'm wearing [Pride Tape]. It's important for us to give a voice to these nights."
Despite a ban since 2023 on teams wearing specialty jerseys, including Pride jerseys, during games, the support for LGBTQ+ inclusivity within the NHL remains strong. Many fans feel that the directive is unnecessarily restrictive, particularly during warm-ups.
