Rutger published: NFL Playoffs Coaches and LGBTQ+ Acceptance: How Do They Rank?
Learner • 74 hits NFL, LGBTQ, Sports, diversity, inclusion

The question of whether a gay NFL player would be accepted by teammates and coaches has been addressed numerous times over the years. Players like Carl Nassib and Michael Sam have paved the way for more open discussions about LGBTQ+ athletes in football.

Acceptance in the NFL?

Carl Nassib was publicly accepted by his Las Vegas Raiders teammates before being recruited by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Michael Sam, who played for the Rams in the preseason, also did not encounter issues within the team environment.

Football legends like Michael Irvin and Bruce Smith have shown support for LGBTQ+ athletes. Irvin expressed that he would never have allowed a gay player's presence to become an issue in the Cowboys' locker room, while Smith acknowledged having played alongside at least one gay teammate during his time with the Buffalo Bills.

Despite such examples, skepticism persists about how NFL head coaches would respond to a player coming out publicly. This skepticism leads us to evaluate how supportive the current playoff coaches and their teams are towards the LGBTQ+ community.

Ranking Playoff Coaches and Teams

We’ve rated the remaining eight head coaches in the NFL playoffs based on their and their teams' support for the LGBTQ+ community using a scale from 0 to 5. Here’s how they match up:

Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders - Score: 7

Dan Quinn received a score of 3, with the team scoring 4. While coaching the Atlanta Falcons, Quinn condemned inappropriate questions about a player’s sexual orientation. The Falcons hired Katie Sowers, a notable move supporting LGBTQ+ representation in coaching.

The Commanders have hosted an official Pride Night and took action against homophobic remarks within the organization.

Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams - Score: 6

Coach McVay scored 1, with his team earning a 5. The Rams have consistently supported LGBTQ+ athletes, notably drafting Michael Sam after he came out publicly. The team also supports diverse representation, including out gay cheerleaders.

Tight end Tyler Higbee publicly apologized for past homophobic tweets, signifying a commitment to growth and respect.

Nick Sirianni and the Philadelphia Eagles - Score: 5

Sirianni scored 1, while the team scored 4. The Eagles have a history of supporting LGBTQ+ fans and athletes, and they were among the first to have an openly gay cheerleader. The team’s actions have had a significant positive impact on their community.

Sean McDermott and the Buffalo Bills - Score: 4

McDermott scored 1, with the team scoring 3. The Bills have shown support by sponsoring the National Gay Flag Football League, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity in sports.

DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans - Score: 3

Both the coach and team scored 1. The Texans have a mixed history, with past opposition to an anti-trans ordinance under previous ownership. Current leadership has yet to make significant supportive statements or actions.

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs - Score: 3

Reid scored 3, the team 0. Reid invited openly gay coach Katie Sowers for an offseason stint, promoting inclusivity. However, the team faced backlash over player remarks that were not aligned with LGBTQ+ support.

Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions - Score: 2

Both Campbell and the team scored 1. Campbell has acknowledged past mistakes, indicating a willingness to learn. The team’s history includes problematic incidents that have yet to be robustly addressed.

John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens - Score: 2

Harbaugh scored 1, the team 1. The Ravens have faced internal discussions on LGBTQ+ issues but have not made strong public affirmations of support. Past remarks by team members have called into question their stance.

Overall, while some teams and coaches are making strides, there is room for improvement across the board in terms of supporting LGBTQ+ players and fans. This ongoing evaluation highlights the importance of continued advocacy and openness in sports.
