Marking a historic milestone: LGBTQ+ and NFL unite

Back in 2024, a remarkable moment unfolded that forever changed how we see LGBTQ+ inclusion in professional sports. This event has become a celebrated chapter in sports history, emphasizing a pivotal moment between LGBTQ+ communities and America's favorite pastime—football.

Uniting Voices: CBS Sports and NFL's documentary tribute

In 2023, CBS Sports, together with NFL and New England Patriots, embarked on an inspiring journey. They crafted a documentary about National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL), premiering on Christmas Eve and even getting airtime during Super Bowl LVIII. This collaboration brought a spotlight on a 30-year relationship between LGBTQ+ pride and flag football.

The NGFFL's incredible journey

Jim Buzinski, who launched Outsports and served as NGFFL's first commissioner, remembers just how modestly it all began. Picture it—a scrappy field at Hollywood High School over three decades ago. Reflecting on those days, Buzinski marvels at how far they've come.

“Back in '89, playing flag football in LA, I never dreamed we'd have anything like NFL backing,” Buzinski reminisced. He recalled a time when their very first Gay Bowl in 2002 was just a few teams playing on a dusty field, ending in a simple get-together at a West Hollywood hotel. “It reminds me a bit like those early NFL founders dreaming big in their own humble beginnings.”

The New England Patriots: Leading inclusivity

Guided by owner Robert Kraft, The New England Patriots have been unwavering allies in promoting LGBTQ+ inclusiveness. Hosting events like those with Boston's LGBTQ Flag Football League and working on documentaries at Gillette Stadium, they're showing everyone that football isn't just about winning games but embracing every fan and player.

Mike DeFusco from CBS Sports, who worked with a mostly LGBTQ+ team on this documentary, expressed, “We wanted one thing: show that football belongs and welcomes everyone.” For him, creating this piece with a diverse team was about authenticity and passion.

Growing bonds: NFL and NGFFL

It all kicked off back in 2003 when Boston's league and Patriots teamed up during a Gay Bowl. Fast forward, and teams like Denver Broncos and New York Giants are following suit, nurturing these bonds.

The NGFFL just keeps growing. Commissioner Joel Horton dreams big—wants every player in this league seeing their own story in that documentary. “These athletes, by playing with heart and passion, are reshaping sports culture,” he said proudly.

Championing diversity within sports

Robert Kraft's steadfast support has long been a beacon in Boston's LGBTQ flag football circles. Tony Ardolino, commissioner, and documentary star, recalled those bygone days in high school when this kindling support was unimaginable. “Now, sports validate who I am, giving new players confidence and belonging,” Ardolino said.

For Boston flag football player Chris Serwacki, being part this documentary was profound. “Seeing CBS Sports and NFL championing queer athletes feels incredible. My hope? That young athletes draw inspiration and chase their dreams relentlessly,” he shared.

All across America, from Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, over Minnesota Vikings, NFL teams are nurturing these partnerships, solidifying a lasting connection between themselves and LGBTQ+ athletes.
