Rutger published: New LGBTQ Venue "Rush" Opening in Vibrant Nightlife District

The vibrant LGBTQ nightlife scene at 14th and U is about to welcome an exciting new addition. "Rush," a bar that has been in the planning stages for several years, is finally ready to open its doors this weekend.

Occupying the space left by the former Lost Society, Rush is set to be a cutting-edge, two-story venue designed to provide an immersive experience with fully integrated light and sound systems. The bar's owner, Jackson Mosley, has been conceptualizing this venture since 2017, drawing on his extensive background in both technology and hospitality. His career includes stints at major companies like LivingSocial and Uber, and his early experiences in the LGBTQ nightlife scene during college helped shape his vision for Rush.

Mosley’s concept combines technology and nightlife in a unique way, though it hasn’t been without challenges. Initially, he aimed to open Rush on 9th and U streets but faced obstacles from the property's management. "It just wasn't the right spot," Mosley reflects. This year, however, Mosley discovered the vacant Lost Society location and seized the opportunity. With 14th Street becoming a central hub for LGBTQ nightlife, Mosley was eager to join the vibrant scene.

Rush is situated within the same building as Bunker, occupying the top two levels. The venue features a flexible indoor-outdoor setup across 6,000 square feet, reimagined with new equipment and a fresh vision. The bar can accommodate at least 300 guests.

Innovative Venue Design

The ground floor of Rush offers a relaxed lounge vibe. This area is characterized by comfortable seating and a large bar, complete with a sound booth and furniture featuring integrated lighting, providing plenty of spaces for conversation.

Ascending to the upper level, patrons will find a dance-focused club space equipped with a "proper drag stage," which Mosley highlights as one of the largest among local LGBTQ venues. The stage, measuring 7.5 feet deep by 22 feet wide, is designed for live performances. With a rooftop level that opens to a deck, the entire space can engage in performances while the interior is painted matte black for a sleek look.

Culinary Offerings and Technology Focus

Rush will offer a full kitchen, setting it apart from many other LGBTQ bars. In a couple of months, patrons can look forward to a diverse menu of bar fare, along with a lively rooftop brunch service.

Jackson Mosley has invested over $150,000 in creating a multi-sensory experience centered around sound and lighting, fulfilling his dream of crafting a sound system he loves. The venue boasts an array of dynamic effects, including lasers, hazers, smoke machines, and CO2 cannons. Mosley aims to integrate light and sound into performances seamlessly, enhancing moments like a dramatic drag queen performance with synchronized sensory effects.

Unique Business Model

Rush introduces an innovative business model by employing all staff as full-time exempt workers with benefits such as healthcare and paid time off. Mosley, as CEO of his company Momentux, plans to expand Rush to other cities following this model. Patrons will swipe their credit cards at the door, reducing card swipes for bar staff and lowering fees. Wristbands will track purchases, eliminating the need for tipping. Service charges will apply only if tabs aren't closed. "I'm rethinking staff roles, right down to the barback," Mosley explains.

As for the drink menu, Rush will gradually introduce a quirky and diverse list of signature cocktails, moving beyond typical options like vodka-sodas. Some creative offerings include the "14th & Unhinged," featuring tequila, mezcal, tamarind, and lime; "Power Vers," with gin, elderflower, lemon, and pink peppercorn foam; and "Flight Attendant," inspired by the popular Biscoff cookie served in-flight.

The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, promising an exciting lineup with renowned DJ Sidekick and local drag talents like Cake Pop, Druex Sidora, and Mari Con Carne. Social media posts promise "good energy, controlled chaos, and hot strangers."

Mosley describes Rush as a blend of pop culture icons and drag, envisioning it as "a fusion of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, with drag queens." With its innovative approach, Rush is set to make a bold statement in the LGBTQ nightlife community.
