Rapper Nelly recently addressed the backlash he faced regarding his decision to perform at an event celebrating the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Emphasizing that his performance was not about politics, he stated, "This isn't about politics for me."
On Monday, January 20, President Trump is set to be sworn in for his second term at the US Capitol in Washington D.C. In anticipation of this event, many demonstrators have gathered in the nation's capital to protest his re-election. Several artists, including Carrie Underwood and the Village People, slated to perform at the inauguration ceremony, have been criticized by their fans.
Nelly, who is scheduled to perform at the Liberty Inaugural Ball, one of the three official inaugural balls, has also faced backlash on social media. Many fans expressed their disappointment, particularly since the event coincides with Martin Luther King Day.
One fan commented on Nelly's Instagram, "Not the inauguration bruh. You lost me with that one," while another frustrated fan added, "never spending a dime on this unc... never mind."
In a live-streamed conversation with fellow rapper Willie D on January 19, Nelly explained that performing for the President of the United States is an "honor" for him, regardless of who holds the office. He stressed that his performance does not reflect his political beliefs or endorsements.
The "Dilemma" singer clarified his stance, saying, "This is not me telling you, ‘Yo, you should vote for this candidate.’ I think you should do your homework and figure out what best helps you and the people who you love and you provide for because I’m clueless on a lot of things when it gets down to it." He believes his role is not to influence political opinions but to entertain.
Nelly reiterated his respect for the office of the presidency, stating, "But what I will say is that I respect the office. This isn’t politics. The politics, for me, is over. [Trump] won! He’s the president. He’s the commander-in-chief of what I would like to say is the best country in the world… It is an honor for me to perform for the president of the United States, regardless of who is in office."
Furthermore, Nelly mentioned that his decision to perform was not influenced by who won the election. He would have performed at the event regardless of the election's outcome. "I didn’t know that you was riding with me because you thought I would ride for who you voted for. I didn’t know that I had to agree with your political choices. If you follow what I do, this shouldn’t even be an argument," he remarked.
He concluded by expressing his support for the office of the President, saying, "I support the President of the United States, regardless of who is in office. Regardless, I respect the office."
The response from fans and the public continues to be mixed, with some understanding his perspective and others feeling disappointed. The conversation around artists performing at political events remains a complex and often controversial topic.
