The aftermath of the 2024 presidential election was devastating for many, particularly for the parents of transgender children. With Donald Trump’s return to office, fears surrounding anti-transgender rhetoric and policies became a daily reality for these families. The anxiety was not unfounded, as the first year of his administration revealed significant challenges and threats to the rights of transgender individuals.
Angela Day, the mother of a transgender son, shares her experiences and priorities in navigating this often hostile environment. Her insights are invaluable for any parent in similar situations, offering guidance on how to support their child while managing the stress and challenges of the current political climate.
"Our family, like many others, had to rethink how we navigate the world," writes Day. "The surge in threats to basic human rights after the election led to a dramatic increase in calls to LGBTQ+ crisis hotlines. Over 800 anti-trans bills have surfaced across the nation, aiming to disenfranchise and often criminalize the existence of transgender individuals and those who support them." The mental toll of processing such widespread hostility is significant, she notes.
Day outlines five essential strategies for coping with these challenges and fostering resilience in transgender children. The first is a reminder that self-care is crucial. "Put your oxygen mask on first," she emphasizes. "You can't effectively care for your child if you're neglecting your own well-being," she adds, citing advice from psychiatrist Jack Turban. She encourages parents to seek social support and therapy, noting the positive impact of connecting with other parents of gender-diverse children through groups like PFLAG or Parents of Trans Youth.
Creating a safety plan is another key recommendation. This includes being prepared to relocate if necessary. Day suggests utilizing resources like Erin Reed’s Anti-Trans National Risk Assessment Map to identify safe states and stresses the importance of having essential documents like passports and birth certificates up-to-date. Furthermore, she advises parents to assess the mobility of their employment, whether through remote work options or opportunities for international relocation.
In anticipation of potential disruptions to healthcare due to anti-trans legislation, Day advises establishing a robust contingency plan. "Don’t wait until care is interrupted," she warns. Engaging with current healthcare providers about backup plans and researching alternative options, including out-of-state and Telehealth services, can ensure continuity of care.
"Know your legal rights," Day urges. Being informed about potential legal challenges is crucial for preparedness. She recommends reaching out to organizations like the Human Rights Campaign, ACLU, Lambda Legal, and Advocates for Trans Equality for support in cases of discrimination.
Empowering parents and allies to "fight back for our kids" is also highlighted by Day. She encourages addressing bigotry and discrimination within personal circles, including homes, schools, and communities. Moreover, engaging with legislators and advocating for policies that protect transgender rights is vital. Tools like 5 Calls, ResistBot, and USA.gov simplify the process of contacting representatives about anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
While no parent should face these daunting concerns, it is an unfortunate reality in the current political climate. Being informed and prepared can make a significant difference in safeguarding the well-being of transgender children.
