Rutger published: Nava Mau Makes History with TV BAFTA Nomination as First Out Trans Performer

A Historic Nod: Nava Mau's BAFTA TV Nomination

The BAFTA TV Awards nominations have arrived with a buzz, and in an exciting twist, Nava Mau has made history. She's become a trailblazer as  the first openly transgender performer nominated, thanks to her standout role in Netflix's drama, Baby Reindeer. This achievement follows a stellar Emmy Awards run last year, where the show brought home six wins.

Baby Reindeer's Moment in the Spotlight

At this year's BAFTA TV Awards, Baby Reindeer has emerged as a powerhouse with eight nominations. The recognition spans from Richard Gadd's lead actor nod to supporting actress nominations for Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau. It seems this show's got no shortage of talent.

Nava Mau: Breaking Barriers

At 32, Nava Mau isn't just acting; she's setting new benchmarks for transgender representation in entertainment. Her BAFTA nod isn't just significant — it's groundbreaking. And let's not forget her Primetime Emmy nomination in 2024 for limited series or TV movie acting.

Looking back on her Emmy nomination, Mau — who'll soon appear in Netflix's upcoming season of You — opened up about the hurdles that marginalized communities face. "Sadly, opportunities for trans people, Latinas, and other underrepresented groups are far too few," she shared.

She added, "This limitation has often hindered our ability to grow in our craft and explore all we can be. Therefore, it's been an honor from day one, even when I first read the script, to think I could be part of a story like Baby Reindeer."

Mau remains hopeful, saying, "I hope I'm not the only [trans actress] moving forward." She believes Baby Reindeer has shown that "when we get our shot, we can grow and surpass expectations."

Tough Competition at BAFTA

This year's BAFTA TV Awards are packed with strong contenders. Baby Reindeer and Mr Bates vs The Post Office are leading the charge. There's also buzz around Say Nothing, set in Northern Ireland's Troubles, and Slow Horses, both racking up multiple nominations.

LGBTQ+ Representation Takes Center Stage

A variety of LGBTQ+ performers have clinched nominations across categories. Besides the Baby Reindeer nominations, Lola Petticrew's up for leading actress thanks to Say Nothing. Sharon D Clarke's also in the mix for her role in the queer Caribbean drama, Mr Loverman.

On top of that, McKinley Belcher III's earned supporting actor recognition for Netflix's mini-series Eric, and Bilal Hasna's been noted for his role  Extraordinary.

LGBTQ+ comedies like We Are Lady Parts and Smoggie Queens continue to earn applause, highlighting the vibrant talent in the community.

Anticipation Builds for the BAFTA Ceremony

Circle May 11 on your calendar — that's when the prestigious BAFTA TV Awards will light up the Royal Festival Hall in London. It's going to be a night of glamour and deserved accolades.

We'd love to hear your take on these nominations. Join the discussion, and let's keep it kind and uplifting!
