"I didn’t want to tell her," Lane admitted, "but before I left, we had been through so much together and, you know, I had never lied to her."
Choosing honesty over silence, Lane sat down with his mother and confessed, "Look, I know you think I’ve been seeing a girl, but actually, I’ve been seeing a guy." Her response was not one of anger, but rather a melancholic sadness: "You mean you’re a homosexual?" she asked.
Lane recalled her next words with a mix of humor and sorrow. She quietly expressed, "I would rather you were dead." Though Lane attempted to lighten the moment with a joke, the hurt was undeniable. "But she didn’t [understand]," he reflected, acknowledging the deep disappointment he felt at her lack of acceptance.

However, his mother took the decision out of his hands and divulged the news to his brothers, Bob and Dan, against his wishes. "She immediately called them and told them," Lane said, remembering the added burden of having to navigate his coming out on her terms, not his.
Fortunately, Lane’s brother Bob was supportive, affirming his love without hesitation. "I love you no matter what," Bob assured him. Dan, while supportive, questioned if it might be a phase, grappling with his own sense of responsibility and failure. "Probably in some way he had failed me," Lane speculated about Dan’s feelings.
