The LGBTQ+ community is mourning the loss of Marcus Freiberger, a beloved yoga instructor who mysteriously disappeared in late February. On March 19, Arizona police discovered his body in a rock quarry near Phoenix, leaving friends and family devastated and searching for answers.
Marcus, a 45-year-old gay man known for his warm personality and dedication to yoga, was last heard from on February 21. He was reportedly planning to meet a blind date the day he vanished. His vehicle, a 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup truck, is still missing, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
Freiberger moved to Phoenix three years ago and quickly became a fixture in the local community. He struggled with addiction and financial issues in the past, but had found stability and joy through teaching yoga at the Melrose Yoga studio. His classes were popular, and he had developed a loyal following of students.
According to his father, Marcus frequently checked in with his mother, making his sudden silence all the more alarming. "He would call her regularly, and then suddenly, he stopped," his father said. This unusual behavior prompted concern among his loved ones.
Amber Cranford, a childhood friend, noted that Marcus seemed perfectly normal the last time they spoke. "Nothing was out of the ordinary," she recalled. "But that same night, his phone was disconnected, and then it went dead." Concerned friends visited his apartment and found his beloved dog alone, indicating Marcus had been absent for an extended period. Cranford explained, "He would never leave his dog like that. He was always at the dog park or hiking with him."
Marcus's father expressed his belief that foul play might be involved, stating, "There’s no reason for him to disappear like that. He wouldn’t leave his dog without arranging care." Friends and family, desperate for answers, began checking local jails and morgues before officially reporting him missing on March 14.
Marcus's sister, Tina Hall, announced his passing on social media, writing, "It is with a heavy heart that I share the tragic news that Marcus is no longer with us. Losing him feels like losing a part of ourselves."
Nicole Keir, a close friend and former co-worker, remembered Marcus for his infectious smile and vibrant spirit. "We used to go dancing after work, and he always made outings fun," she shared. Amber Cranford described his death as "devastating," noting that he had just graduated from a yoga certification course and was excited about his future plans.
"He had all these ideas for classes and was thrilled about his teaching journey," Cranford said. "It was a spiritual and fulfilling job for him." The loss has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew him, especially his family. "We are heartbroken and in shock," Cranford added. "It will take time to process this tragedy. Marcus was a huge presence in our lives."
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of Marcus's death, urging anyone with information to contact them at 602-534-2121.
In this time of mourning, the LGBTQ+ community reflects on the impact Marcus had as a warm and inspiring figure. His passion for yoga and his unwavering commitment to his friends and family will not be forgotten.
