Rutger published: Musicians Unite in Support of Trans Rights in Open Letter

Musicians from the UK music scene have come together in a powerful show of solidarity with the transgender community, responding to recent legal changes with an open letter pledging their unwavering support. Among those leading this initiative are well-known artists Charli XCX and Olly Alexander.

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court recently ruled that the legal definition of woman does not include transgender women. This ruling specifies that the protected characteristic of “sex” under the Equality Act 2010 pertains solely to biological considerations. This decision has sparked significant controversy and debate, capturing the attention of public figures and activists alike.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his approval of the ruling, stating that he was “really pleased” with the clarity it brings regarding the definition of sex. However, this perspective is not shared by all, and the ruling has mobilized thousands of protesters who have expressed their discontent through rallies and public demonstrations.

Simon Black, CEO of Stonewall, emphasized the profound impact of this ruling on the transgender community, articulating the worries and fears it has generated amongst those it affects. In a further development, Dr. Victoria McCloud, the UK’s only openly transgender judge, has announced plans to challenge the ruling at the European Court of Human Rights, arguing that the Supreme Court failed to fully consider its implications for transgender individuals.

"A Unified Stand for Inclusivity and Equality"

In response to these events, an open letter initiated by artist Tom Rasmussen, publicist Tom Mehrtens, Olly Alexander and his manager Martha Kinn, has quickly gained the support of numerous influential figures within the creative industry. The letter voices a collective commitment to stand in solidarity with the trans, non-binary, and intersex communities impacted by the Supreme Court’s decision.

“The UK music industry is a vibrant, diverse landscape that thrives on creativity and inclusivity,” the letter declares. “We have long celebrated a multitude of voices and identities. The music industry here in the UK is one of our most trailblazing and culturally vital assets – one in which trans, intersex, and non-binary people are woven into every aspect, past, present, and future.”

Furthermore, the letter calls for comprehensive protection against discrimination and harassment across all sectors of the industry. It highlights the necessity of standing with those who have condemned both the Supreme Court ruling and accompanying guidance, underscoring the negative consequences they foresee for all individuals, particularly the harm faced by trans, non-binary, and intersex people.

The open letter has garnered over 520 signatures, showcasing support from a wide array of musicians and industry figures. Signatories include prominent artists such as Charli XCX, Olly Alexander, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, JADE, Mae Muller, Siobhán Donaghy of Sugababes, Mabel, and Paloma Faith, amongst others. Their collective voices highlight the critical role that influential companies and organizations, particularly independent record labels, can play in speaking out against the ruling and supporting marginalized communities.

In closing, the letter provides resources and links compiled by Queer House Party, outlining ways to offer further support and engagement. As the music industry continues to rally in defense of inclusivity and equality, this collective stand serves as a powerful testament to the enduring commitment of creatives to advocate for social justice and human rights.
