It was a milestone moment in Montgomery County as Bethesda proudly celebrated its first-ever LGBTQIA+ resource center opening last Saturday. The event was marked by a ribbon-cut ceremony that drew local government officials, community members, and heads from LGBTQ organizations, eager and excited about this new addition.
Makeda Richardson, who chairs MoCo Pride Center, Inc.'s board, and CEO Phillip Alexander Downie opened their arms—and doors—to welcome everyone. Nestled right in downtown Bethesda, this new spot isn't just a building; it signifies a huge leap forward in support and resources available locally.
“Today, we make history together,” declared Richardson at this monumental event. “We're officially opening Montgomery County Pride Family Resource Center—the first in our area.” Conveniently on Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center's second floor, it invites visitors daily.
The center's birth was no small feat; it came about because folks rallied with donations, grants, and admirable collaboration with Montgomery County's officials. All this stands as a testament: this community supports its LGBTQIA+ members wholeheartedly.
Downie spoke about how teamwork made this center a reality, attributing it all back “to our broader Montgomery County Pride Family.” This family includes dynamic organizations like Coalition For Inclusive Schools And Communities, Drag Story Hour DMV, and Maryland Trans Unity, among others.
Inside, you'll find peer-led support groups offering a hand tailored just right—whether you're young, transgender, gender-expansive, or bridging generations. Plus, they provide essential services like HIV/STI testing, health navigation, and culturally sensitive referrals. With educational sessions, identity-affirming workshops, and monthly queer market events, it fosters connection and support.
Downie shared passionately, "This pride center embodies a future built on care and community—a welcoming refuge where all receive dignity and respect." The center isn't just about community; it's about practical help too, offering free STI/HIV screenings, a lending library, crisis management, and housing support.
Look forward—events are on their horizon: from support meet-ups and sunset yoga sessions, drag story hours, and board game nights aimed at sparking joy among everyone gathered.
Voices rang out during opening remarks. Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich touched on how progressive their county remains despite nationwide challenges against LGBTQ rights. He spotlighted their 2020 "LGBTQ Bill Of Rights," expanding anti-discrimination codes.
Reflecting personally was Lee Blinder, Trans Maryland's Executive Director: "Growing up trans and queer in Montgomery County during those days was tough," Blinder recalled, imagining how transformative such a haven could've been.
Also joining in were Council President Kate Stewart, Vice President Will Jawando, LGBTQ+ Liaison Amenia Johnson, and State Delegate Teresa Woorman. Council member Evan Glass added, "In Montgomery County, everyone belongs, regardless if it's race or gender identity or who they love—these are our values."
With this center's debut, Montgomery County strides forward, exemplifying what unity and advocacy can do. This center stands proud as a beacon, resonating with community spirit and initiative's power.
