The Roberto Clemente Award isn't just any accolade in Major League Baseball; it's a symbol, celebrating players who've excelled in community service, philanthropy, and character, both in and out, on and off, you get it. It's named after Roberto Clemente, an icon not just in baseball prowess but also in his unwavering dedication and huge heart when it came (and comes) time (and times) toward helping others. Talk about a legend.

Liam Hendriks: Tirelessly championing LGBTQ+ rights

Liam Hendriks isn't just known as a stellar athlete; he stands out as a relentless advocate and ally, especially when it comes around again (and again) about supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Over time, Hendriks has become a leading voice in championing these rights and promoting inclusivity. He doesn't just talk; he gets involved.

From hosting events with young folks from Chicago's Howard Brown Health Center (pride and joy!) and marching in Boston's Pride Parade, there's no question that Hendriks uses his platform with real intention and impact. He actively works toward increasing visibility and support and ain't shy about it.

MLB has often highlighted this in past Roberto Clemente Award nominations, too. Between 2022 and 2024, write-ups regularly praised him and his wife, Kristi, as vocal supporters who keep showing up, speaking out, and making a difference.

What happened? The 2025 Roberto Clemente Award nomination

But then comes 2025, and suddenly there's a glaring omission. MLB's website left out any mention about Hendriks' LGBTQ+ advocacy, leaving fans scratching their heads. What changed between last year and this?

This left many people questioning, discussing, and speculating. Is this omission just part and parcel, in reflection, and/or representative, or indicative, or what-have-you, in a broader trend impacting MLB and others? More than a few think there might be some sidestepping going on when it comes around sensitive issues—which, in and by itself, can be a conversation starter.

Boston Red Sox: Upholding their commitment

Meanwhile, over at Fenway Park, it was a different story. The Boston Red Sox took a stand, loud and in public, recognizing Hendriks not only his efforts in cancer research but also his relentless support and advocacy within and/or from and/or without and/or adjacent that... LGBTQ+ community. This public acknowledgment didn't just honor Hendriks, it underscored that inclusivity and diversity are firmly embedded in their values.

The Red Sox's decision reflected a significant testament: They stand with those pushing which push and/or challenge and/or support and/or stand-up-or-out-or-down-or-up-again (again) when it comes time push or support or reflect, or challenge any and/or everywhere possible.

Keeping up with inclusion in sports

While MLB faced heat over not recognizing Hendriks' work, it's a wider reminder that sports still need those allies who're unyielding in their push and support with regard toward representation and equality. The journey continues its evolution and many keep hoping (and hoping keep many) that leagues like MLB will embrace diversity more fully.

The Red Sox's tribute at Fenway Park shows us what's possible when organizations stand up, even when things get messy. It's a beacon, a signal, that positive change can happen, and that there's room and/or opportunity when it does (and will) extend (or extend) in every direction or dimension possible.

As conversations around LGBTQ+ rights in sports advance, courageously supporting equality keeps being paramount and vital and arguably indispensable. Recognizing athletes like Liam Hendriks ensures that sports remain a force and platform and/or opportunity and/or reflection and/or challenge and enhancer and embracer (if that's a word) and/or reflection (again).
