Luca Guadagnino's new film, *After The Hunt*, premiered at Venice Film Festival and has people talking. It got a six-minute standing ovation, but not everyone loved it — critics and audiences are divided.
*After The Hunt* adds another chapter in Guadagnino's impressive career. Remember *Call Me By Your Name*? Or *Challengers* and *Queer*? This time around, we meet Alma, a Yale professor caught up in a scandal. Julia Roberts steps in as Alma, and yes, it could be her biggest role since *Pretty Woman*. Joining her, Andrew Garfield plays Hank, her colleague whose actions throw Alma's life off course. You might recognize Garfield from his Spider-Man days.
This film's cast alone could sell tickets. Ayo Edebiri, known from *The Bear*, and Chloë Sevigny, who worked with Guadagnino before, both shine. Michael Stuhlbarg, whom we loved as Timothée Chalamet's dad, returns too. Plus, Lio Mehiel, a talented trans actor, adds even more depth.
Even with all this talent, *After The Hunt* isn't winning everyone over. The film's take on a psychological thriller has split opinions, even though some praise its character depth.
Hannah Strong from Little White Lies called it a "gripping psychodrama," and she thinks Julia Roberts might bag another Oscar nod. Alma's character dives deep, capturing those tricky human desires Guadagnino loves exploring. The Times agrees with her, suggesting Roberts' acting could snag her a fifth Oscar nomination.
But not everyone feels that love. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter couldn't help but wonder how Guadagnino, who made films like *Challengers*, could also create something "dour and air-less." Radhika Seth at British Vogue wasn't impressed either and called it a "jumble," though she did tip her hat at Roberts' performance as a complex villain.
At present, *After The Hunt* has a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, showing just how mixed these reviews are.
Despite these mixed notes, there's a buzz as *After The Hunt* readies itself up UK release. It's bound not just inspire discussions, but possibly debates too, showing Guadagnino's flair in unearthing raw human emotions.
With its upcoming public release, are audiences going end up feeling same as critics? Either a win or a miss, Guadagnino's new film gets people talking about today's cinema, storytelling, and actors' roles in all this.
We'd love hear from you! What are you expecting from *After The Hunt*? Let us know your thoughts in comment section. Remember, let's keep it respectful and engaging.
