Rutger published: Misrepresented Flag: Clearing Up the Misconceptions

In recent times, a particular flag has been misrepresented online as being related to the LGBTQ+ community. This flag, however, has no legitimate ties to LGBTQ+ movements. Instead, it has been created by individuals with intentions that are at odds with the values and goals of the queer community.

The Real Meaning Behind the Flag

The flag, which was first seen in 2018, is falsely claimed to be an LGBTQ+ Pride symbol. In truth, it represents a sect of individuals who aim to normalize paedophilia by misusing LGBTQ+ culture and language. This group refers to themselves as "minor-attracted persons" (MAPs), and some within this group use the term "NOMAPs" to denote non-offending individuals.

The creator of this flag, a Tumblr user whose account has since vanished, provided specific meanings for its colors. The pink and blue sections are said to symbolize attractions to young boys and girls, while the yellow and white stripes are intended to represent childhood, a general attraction to minors, and an alleged innocence and non-offending stance.

The Origin and Misuse of the Term "Minor-Attracted Person"

The term "NOMAP" began to appear in various fringe forums in the late 2010s. Despite the limited number of individuals openly identifying as NOMAPs, the term continues to appear in certain online spaces. LGBTQ+ activists and communities have consistently and vehemently rejected any association with this term and its implications.

However, misinformation spread by certain groups has led to false claims about LGBTQ+ support for NOMAPs. In 2016, certain right-wing message boards, such as 4chan, propagated the unfounded idea that the LGBTQ+ acronym had been expanded to "LGBTP," with the "P" standing erroneously for "pedosexual."

Combatting Harmful Misinformation

This false narrative is part of a broader set of conspiracy theories aimed at portraying LGBTQ+ individuals as predators or "groomers." These claims have been thoroughly debunked by fact-checking organizations. For instance, in a 2016 article, Snopes confirmed that no legitimate LGBTQ+ organization has ever endorsed or supported paedophilia. Such attempts to link the queer community to these harmful behaviors are rooted in bigotry and misinformation.

Despite this, the narrative was further amplified by certain media outlets, which falsely alleged that paedophiles were seeking inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community, even going so far as to create a "Pride" flag. This hoax perpetuated by fringe far-right groups eventually led to claims of a new version of the Progress Pride flag featuring MAP colors, a claim that was also debunked by Snopes.

In a 2019 interview with AFP, an anonymous MAP admitted that the flag is not universally accepted even within NOMAP groups, underscoring the fact that legitimate LGBTQ+ movements have nothing to do with this symbol or its creators.

Ensuring Respectful Dialogue

It's crucial for communities and individuals to remain informed and critical of such claims, ensuring that the integrity of the LGBTQ+ movement is not undermined by false narratives. Discussions around sensitive topics should always be handled with respect and care, focusing on building understanding rather than spreading misinformation.
