Rutger published: Misleading Claims About Transgender Involvement in Mass Shootings

Debunking false claims about transgender involvement in mass shootings

Lately, some right-wing groups have been spreading misleading info in an attempt at pushing an anti-transgender narrative. Leading this charge, we have organizations like The Heritage Foundation, a well-known Christian nationalist think tank. They've seized on a wave anti-trans rhetoric, especially following an unfortunate incident involving activist Charlie Kirk, and they're calling on lawmakers push back against transgender rights.

Calling For a New Domestic Terrorism Category

One big demand from these groups? A new domestic terrorism category by FBI, something they're calling "Transgender Ideology-Inspired Extremism" (TIVE). This suggestion fits in with broader political efforts wanting more federal monitoring on supposed domestic terrorist threats.

Dubious Data Interpretation

The Heritage Foundation's assertions rest on a rather selective take on data. They claim that "experts estimate that 50% all major (non-gang related) school shootings since 2015 have somehow involved transgender ideology." Yet, this bold claim leans on a very limited dataset.

Roger Severino, a VP over at The Heritage Foundation, took this claim social media. He mentioned a dataset just eight shootings, cherry-picked from Gun Violence Archive—a widely respected online platform that collects data from law enforcement and media outlets.

But think about this: Gun Violence Archive reports a whopping 4,147 mass shootings in U.S. from 2018-2025. Singling out just eight as "major shootings"—without a clear definition—questions their credibility.

Pushed back by experts and data inconsistencies

Jonathan Lewis, a researcher with George Washington University's Program on Extremism, blasted this method. He pointed out analyzing a minor segment school shootings over such a long time lacks foundation.

When you look closer at numbers, Heritage Foundation's claims crumble. From 5,748 mass shootings tallied since 2013, only five shooters have been identified as transgender, nonbinary, or folks who got gender-affirming care. This comes a mere 0.087% all mass shooters, thoroughly debunking their inflated 50% claim.

Context matters: Studies show about 0.82% U.S. population identifies as transgender, likely a low estimate. There's no solid data backing idea significantly higher transgender involvement in shootings.

Insights from Violence Prevention Experts

Hamlin University's Violence Prevention Project, which manages a detailed mass shooter database, says a mass shooting involves four or more deaths (excluding shooter) in public, non-gang-related settings. From their analysis 200 such events, 98% shooters were male, and only one was transgender.

Heritage Foundation's History with LGBTQ+ Issues

The Heritage Foundation has long been against LGBTQ+ rights, providing some backdrop their current actions. They've consistently fought inclusive policies, like same-sex marriage and banning conversion therapy. The term "transgender ideology" they use in proposed TIVE category often misconstrues transgender folks as pushing an agenda.

This narrative aims paint transgender individuals as extremists instead people simply living their truth. Such rhetoric marginalizes and stigmatizes transgender communities.

Combat Misinformation and Raise Public Awareness

In wake Charlie Kirk incident, wild rumors spread that shooter used bullets inscribed “transgender ideology” — clearly unfounded claims that show a broader problem misinformation targeting transgender individuals.

It's essential media outlets and public at large critically examine sources and accuracy claims like these. Promoting true representation and understanding transgender experiences vital in fighting harmful stereotypes and fostering equality.
