Rutger published: Miriam Margolyes on Her Long-Lasting Love with Partner of Nearly 60 Years

Miriam Margolyes, well-known for her role in the Harry Potter series and celebrated as a British cultural icon, has opened up about her long-standing relationship with her rarely-seen partner, Heather. As they approach sixty years together, Margolyes has offered a rare glimpse into their unique partnership.

The outspoken and warm-hearted actress met her partner, Australian professor Heather, in 1968 while working on a radio drama for the BBC. Over the years, their relationship has grown into a deep and abiding connection, leading them to enter into a civil partnership. Margolyes once noted that their civil partnership was more about practicality, allowing them to have legal rights such as being each other's next of kin in times of illness, rather than a romantic gesture.

A Love Beyond Conventional Boundaries

Recently, in a candid interview, the BAFTA-winning star of "The Age of Innocence" discussed the profound love she shares with Heather, whom she affectionately refers to as her "person." Margolyes expressed, "We truly love each other. She is an extraordinary, brilliant woman, and every conversation with her is a joy – sometimes surprising, sometimes intense, but always enriching. She is my person, and I am hers. We should be together as we grow old."

Despite being together for nearly six decades, Miriam and Heather have never lived together full-time. Miriam resides in London, while Heather makes her home in Amsterdam. Nonetheless, they cherish the time they spend together, often enjoying vacations in Tuscany and New South Wales.

When asked about their future living arrangements, the 84-year-old actress expressed her hope that they will live together permanently. "I hope to live with Heather in the house we bought in Italy in 1973 until we pass," she explained.

Back in the early 1970s, the couple purchased a farmhouse in Italy with plans to eventually make it their shared home. In a 2023 appearance on her favorite chat show, The Graham Norton Show, Margolyes remarked that living apart was "silly," given the depth of their relationship. "We are together, but we live apart. It's time for us to live together," she stated. "We are old, and time is precious. It's silly to live separately."

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Life Together

Margolyes is actively beginning the process of relocating from London to Italy, although she must return periodically due to Brexit-related residency restrictions, which limit UK residents to 90-day stays in the EU without a permanent residency permit. "I might need to become Dutch," she mused, acknowledging Heather's European residency status. "We want to be together."

In her discussions, Margolyes also touched upon serious topics such as her openness to euthanasia if faced with significant mental or physical decline. "I want to live fully as myself," she explained. "If I were to lose my ability to speak or face severe health challenges, I would want the option to end my life on my own terms."

Throughout her life, Margolyes has faced health challenges, including undergoing a major heart operation and dealing with spinal stenosis. Despite these hurdles, her spirit remains undiminished. She continues to perform and is currently touring her show, "Miriam Margolyes – From A to Z" across the UK.

Margolyes’ story is one of enduring love, resilience, and a commitment to living life authentically. Her relationship with Heather stands as a testament to a partnership that transcends traditional boundaries, rooted in mutual respect, affection, and shared dreams.

We invite you to share your thoughts on Miriam Margolyes' story and her inspiring relationship with Heather. Leave your comments below, and let's keep this conversation respectful and supportive.
