Miriam Margolyes, who many adore as Professor Sprout from Harry Potter, has never shied away from speaking her mind. Recently, she opened up about why she turned down an offer from BBC's The Celebrity Traitors. At 84, she's still as vivacious and sharp as ever, and she didn't hold back when discussing her decision at a recent public event.
Speaking at Cheltenham Festival, where she's just as well-loved as she was in her Harry Potter days, Miriam didn't mince words about her disinterest in reality TV. When asked about joining The Celebrity Traitors, her answer was as clear as day: "No." She went on, "I was offered this job. No. I've never watched it, and I don't plan on starting now."
The Celebrity Traitors, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, has been a smash hit, with a debut season that saw nearly 12 million viewers. The game involves celebrities who must deceive and strategize as "Faithfuls" or "Traitors," all in pursuit a charity prize. But despite its popularity, Miriam's not budged—she's just not interested.
Even though The Celebrity Traitors would love someone like Miriam in a second season, she's not budged an inch. Fans adore her straightforwardness, humor, and authenticity. And although she's tempted neither by fame nor money, they love her all more. "There are some jolly good people doing it," she acknowledged, mentioning folks like Alan Carr and Jonathan Ross, but added, "You won't get me on it."
While Miriam's content watching from afar, Jonathan Ross has been living it. He's admitted he didn't much enjoy being a Traitor, feeling uneasy about all that deceiving that comes with it. The show tests celebrities with a social experiment: conceal your identity or face elimination. At its end, if a Traitor remains, they take home all funds meant charity. It's captivating stuff, no doubt, but not everyone's cup tea—Miriam included.
At Cheltenham, Miriam also spoke about her new book, The Little Book Of Miriam, calling it a "memory palace" filled with her unfiltered stories and wisdom. Known not just her acting, but her strong beliefs, she recently made headlines calling herself "woke" unapologetically on RTE's The Late Late Show. "I love being a lesbian," she said with pride. "I'm not going apologise. It's great fun."
While some might be disappointed in her decision on The Celebrity Traitors, Miriam Margolyes remains a beloved figure who fans admire more than ever. Her refusal play along only underscores her unfailing authenticity, making her a role model all over again.
