The English football club Millwall FC has been fined £15,000 ($20,500) following an incident where fans directed anti-gay chants at Ben Chilwell, a player for Crystal Palace. The incident took place during a fifth-round FA Cup match against Premier League team Crystal Palace in March.
An independent regulatory commission has not only imposed the fine but also implemented an extended anti-discrimination action plan for the club, which will remain in effect until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season. Additionally, the club received a formal warning regarding their misconduct related to crowd control during the match.
The Football Association (FA) released a statement indicating that Millwall FC failed to ensure that their spectators and supporters behaved in an orderly manner. Specifically, the club was unable to prevent the use of improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting language that referenced sexual orientation.
Millwall admitted to the charges, which were related to the "Chelsea rent boy" chant aimed at Ben Chilwell, who was on loan from Chelsea at the time. This particular chant has been classified as a prosecutable offense by the Crown Prosecution Service since January 2022, allowing for bans against individuals who use it.
In response to the incident, Millwall FC has pledged to tackle discrimination through its Equality Steering Committee and its dedicated anti-discrimination campaign, known as All ‘Wall. Part of their action plan includes encouraging supporters to report any discriminatory behavior they witness during matches through the club’s dedicated "Hear Hate, Don't Hesitate" helpline.
A spokesperson for Millwall FC stated, "The club reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of discrimination. Such behavior has no place in society and is entirely at odds with the values Millwall stands for." They have urged fans and supporters to maintain respectful conduct at all times.
The FA has consistently opposed the "Chelsea rent boy" chant and has expressed a commitment to eliminating such behavior from the sport. Historically, this chant is believed to have originated from Earl’s Court, an area known in the 1960s and 1970s for its queer-friendly bars and as a location associated with male sex workers.
Millwall FC finished eighth in the league table last season, narrowly missing the play-offs for promotion from the second tier of English football. Despite the setback from this incident, the club is focused on improving their future performance on and off the pitch.
The club's efforts to combat discrimination are crucial for creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all supporters and players. By implementing their action plan and promoting inclusive values, Millwall FC aims to set a positive example within the football community and beyond.
The incident has sparked discussions around the importance of inclusivity in sports and the role clubs play in fostering a culture of respect and diversity. As Millwall FC continues to work on its anti-discrimination initiatives, it hopes to drive meaningful change and promote equality across the football world.
